Mavic X517 MTB Rim
Number of Reviews:   3
Average Rating:

Mavic's best XC-specific rim. Strong, lightweight Maxtal alloy with welded seam, stainless eyelets, and anodized finish. 32-hole, drilled for presta valves. Rim only, priced per rim.

Pros: Look Good. Hold up well.....
Cons: Ummmm....the logo started peeling off about a year ago on the rear rim.
Time Used: More than 2 years
Comments: I've been using this on a mountain bike commuter from the North Coast of California to the Souththern Puget Sound in Washington. Needless to say, they've been exposed to mud, rain, sand, salt air, nasty washington winter road grit, etc and they seem to hold up pretty well. I would mirror the first reviewers concern with winter (snow) grit as I've noticed hugely increased wear this year since I've been in the Puget Sound. However, I scored these (new!) on ebay for $150 two years ago. I have NEVER trued them, even when taken out of the box! They are pretty darn straight and I take them on short trail rides daily and commute to and from work daily. Great rims!

Pros: light nimble wheel
Cons: durability in winter conditions suspect with conventional brakes. Would only reccomend for use on the rear with disk brake when repeatably exposed to gritty/calcium chloride treated street conditions. Ok on front with conventional brake.
Time Used: 1 Year
Comments: Used less than a year in new england on a commuter mtb. Did not hold up well under the onslaught of winter street grit. XTR rear brakes carved through sidewalls in less than one winter. Internal cracks propagated between valve stem port and adjacent spoke holes. Miscellaneous pairs of spoke holes suffered from same.

Pros: Very light, good looking, strong
Cons: None so far. I'll be interested to see if the braking surfaces hold up better than my cheaper rims.
Time Used: Less Than A Month
Comments: I've only been out on 2 rides with these so far but they were both pretty rough trails and both rims are perfectly true.
Rating: 5
Recommendation: Yes I would recommend it to a friend
