I got this at a Wally World in Tn (passing through) for $79 off of the "specials" rack out front. I can''t complain at all, the price was right and it has held up awesome. I just started using it more again and aside from needing some work with the shifters and new cables, it performs just fine. Pedal is falling apart so will be replacing both soon, and I will be giving this a fine tune up with a friend who used to be in the LBS business, hope to get another 6+ years out of it after that.

after the fifth time i used it the fork failed, real derailleur, rear shock. i ipgrade the fork with a Sr Suntour, derailleur, complete rear wheel, and 9spd cassete. total cost $350 plus $50 i paid for the bike and now the bike rides like a champ when i use it for training. i recommed this bike to people that ride soft on pavement, I dont recommend this bike to those who ride agressive on rough terrain as this bike will star falling in parts unless you make some upgrades to the bike.

Pros:
Cheap
Build quality is actually pretty good
Front shock starts to work a lot better after a day of use
Disc brakes (see comments)
Cons:
rear rubber brakes squeal from time to time (may need to be broken in or adjusted)
it sometimes shifts weird, but just move it a click or less and it will be fine (may be the actual shifter it self)
Time Used:
Less Than A Month
Comments:
Disc brakes work pretty good when you adjust them (loosen cable bolt and move the arm to make it closer to disc) and it worked a crap ton better then when i bought it.
I''m 220lbs and took this off jumps and over 30 mph downhill as long as going to mud and dirt and it actually did really well for a $200 bike.
And this is for the 2011 model, doesn''t look cheap, I removed all the stickers except the mongoose one and it looks clean and a lot nicer.
Rear suspension worked pretty good too, also I like that the frame has mounts for an aftermarket disc brake.

Ok guys, tons of complaints I see talking about cheap; low end components, junk, etc. Que it up; this is WALMART! If you want high end; go to a Bike shop and pay a bunch of money; but stop complaining about a $160 bike you bought from the land of cheap, being;; well, "cheap"!!!
I look at these reviews to see if it is a bad idea to save a bit of money on a bike and just discount it when people use the term junk, or crap, cheap, etc. We are buying a bike from Walmart because it is cheap!!! Any serious mountain biker is not going to buy a bike from Walmart, period. We all know high end components are sold at bike shops. So, the market for these bikes is typically set for the casual biker; vs. hardcore who jumps, does parks, heavy trails, etc. So, the question is, FOR THE PRICE, does this bike perform for the casual usage to which it was intended?
Irritating when you try to get some reasonable thoughts on a bike, and you get whiners wondering why the budget minded bike they bought does not perform like an Elsworth… I think I am leaning toward buying it, so I will give an accurate review…

I bought this bike to replace another which I had for fifteen years. My previous bike did not have full suspension or a disc brake. I do most riding off road where there are some fairly decent washouts, sharp turns, jumps, etc.. This is not a high end bike so if you''re looking for that kind of quality in this bike head to your local bike shop and open wide your checkbook.
After putting the bike through the paces I''m fairly satisfied. My first time out I noticed a knock in the driveline. Took it to my local shop and they determined it was a faulty bearing in the free wheel which is a press fit bearing. A new Shimano free wheel was $25. They also completely went through the bike. Trued up both wheels, adjusted front and rear shifters, cut back and re-routed some cables, and so on. Total bill was just under $100. Not a noise or complaint with the bike since. I did replace the seat with the one from my old bike. For under $300 I have a fairly decent ride.
I do laugh though after reading the other reviews; People griping about the parts being made in China and Taiwan. Talk to the mechanics at your local shop. Most components, no matter how expensive, are made overseas. Welcome to the real world!

Pros:
Solid built frame, disc brake/v-brake combination system, good tire size/rims
Cons:
Uncomfortable seats, Disc Rotor needs constant re-alignment, chain derails on the front gear shift if not turned carefully. No room for water bottle cage.
Time Used:

Comments:
Overall this was a solid bike. I used to build bikes from scratch so buying a pre-built one was new to me. I opted to not have Wal-mart assemble and instead put it together myself. A lot of things that were wrong with the bike are simple and easy upgrades with basic bicycle knowledge. I got rid of the front and rear axles and both had a stress fracture on them. The seat was replaced with a real mountain bike saddle, and I opted to buy aftermarket MTB Fox Racing Fork Shocks. My rims are long gone, but they held up pretty well. Replaced the gear shifters with aftermarket ones. Finally I ditched the V-Brake and I run front and Rear Disc Brakes along with non pro-max disc rotors.
I ride offroad and hard offroad, so I opted to install 3rd party parts from trusted MTB Manufacturers for my personal needs. But I spent a good 2 weeks riding it stock and despite the minor flaws, it''s a well built bike. I know it''s weird for a girl to use a "men''s bike" but it doesn''t bother me that much. It''s a good bike for what I want to use it for.
My #1 complaint is no room for a water bottle cage, but then again, with a frame shock, that does make it impossible to do anything with. I just had to learn to wear a hydration pack instead. I also Reccomend to anyone who buys a replacment seat, to A) Make sure it''s comfortable because if you ride for 2+ hours a day, you don''t want a sore butt and B) with front shocks and rear frame shock, get a Sealed Gas Shock Seat Post. It will save your back and butt a lot of pain. And don''t bother with your store''s "Retail Parts Plan Repair" w/e. Go to a credible and reputable bike shop. Don''t know one? Research.
With minor tweaking, this is a well built bike. And I did read someone say "After my warrenty expired, this bike broke." Guess what? That happens on EVERYTHING. Don''t let a few good or bad reviews influence you. Try it for yourself and you be the judge.

I bought this bike used at a flea market for $60.00 and it''s well worth that or more. I ride it on paved roads and I use it to run my dogs on old logging roads and off-road trails. So far, it has held up very well, even with 3 Siberians pulling it at a pretty good speed down the trails. I plan to upgrade the braking systems and wheel assemblies in the near future just for practicality because of how I use the bike but, it is over all a very good bike for the price. Just be ready to do some minor upgrades if you''re going to put it through any rough terrain riding. Of course, this is true of any bike yoou buy from a department store. If you want a good, solid bike you don''t need to do upgrades on, you should buy a higher priced bike from a bike specialty store or even a professional bike builder.

Inexpensive, available at WalMart, good set.
Cons:
Basic medium duty wheels, rear rim brakes instead of disc, front disc brakes stress front spokes.
Time Used:

Comments:
First, ALL WalMart bikes should be trued up by your local bike shop as WalMart doesn''t hire bike techs, they hire stock and floor staff.
Second, this bike when adjusted right rocks. I''m not a light person and have rode this thing more than 250 miles so far and only now is the front wheel beginning to run out of true.
The suspensions both front and back have yet to bottom out under me, the derails could be a little less sensitive, but the brakes grab on 45 degree downhill runs as expected, and the standard tires grab the dirt as well.
If you want a good start for modding, this is one. It really needs stronger wheels with heavier duty spokes or mags, disc brakes in back as well as front, and a better seat than the standard crotch killer it comes with. Other than that, very ride worthy.

-the grip shifters jam up after 2 weeks
-the bottom bracket is one giant heaping pile of wasted effort
-the rear derailor fell apart with in a month, it has a pointless piece at the bottom that wil catch on your spokes if you slide against a rock or somthing of the sort
-the handle bars will start to bend over time and one day you will look at it and say holly %^$# what happened
-the seat post will strip out and the seat will smack you in the groin (happened to me on the third ride)
-last but by no means or strech of the imagination least, the swing arm is DANGEROUS today it snaped sending me in to a tree, i have beaten the crap out of name brand f/s bikes far worse than i treated this xr200 and they have stood the punishment,
if you want a bike for riding around town every now and then it might handle the job but anything off road it will buckle and you will probably get hurt

I bought this cycle today at a local pawn shop for 40.00. It is well used, so I thought there might be some useful information I could add. I saw this model at China-Mart a couple of years ago, and I was impressed with the ultra smooth suspension, disc brakes, and relativly light weight. I ride on sidewalks, and over curbs with my 8 year old on weekends, so I need a full suspension cycle to save my nads, but not a full-off mountain bike. Unfortunately, with these cheap Chinese bikes, parts do not hold up well, and tend to create a snowball effect if not repaired, or corrected promptly.
I can tell this cycle was assembled by an Idiot. I originaly thought the rear shock was bound-up, but I later found all of the rear suspension bolts were super tight, not allowing the suspension to travel. Once I loosened the bolts, everything moved properly. I don't think the previous owner over tightened the bolts, it must have come from China-mart this way. The tight suspension caused the rear shock to fail early, because it couldn't travel more than half an inch, wich caused the suspension bolts to corrode because they couldn't pivot, wich caused the lower (steel) A-Arm to stress crack. Also, The rear wheel had been replaced. I read an earlier post about shoddy rear axles, so I assume this one was bad too. If anyone knows where to get a new shock, please e-mail me. i973olds@aol.com
This is a decent cycle, but China-Mart will hire any idiot for assembly. I wonder how many bicycles were ruined this way as opposed to actually breaking. I don't expect alloy brake handles, or decent derailleurs for $159, but Wal-mart could at least hire someone to assemble bicycles correctly.
PS the stress crack is on the rear (Black Steel) lower frame. it is underneath, on the chain side, about half an inch from the main pivot point, tward the rear. Check yours too.

Luckily I bought it from one that at least hired someone who knew what they were doing to put thier bikes together, so that sped the initial stuff up. scince then I've taken it out on the Pope and Talbot trails around Poulsbo, WA and it has preformed reasonably well. I have a complaint with the rear shock, though it is VERY stiff, even with me wieghing in at 220. But I got an upgrade on the front shock ( they didn't have any more of the Mozo M30, i guess), so the gave me a SR Suntour with more travel and, in my experience, a smoother ride. Eventually this bike will be scrapped, and be rebuilt again.

I used this bike at a friends house on a 10-mile, moderately challenging, up and down track. I'm not much of a technical rider, I'll plan where I go when I get there, I don't do much jumping, only when needed. On the long downhills, the suspension did great, made it a much smoother ride copared to my worse no-suspension bike. It preformed well on the major uphills, sometimes the shifting can be a bit touchy. I plan to get one and eventually replace everything on it 'til I have a completely new bike. If you are willing to do some tuning and repairs (I had to repair and tune my friends) yourself, then you should be fine with this bike if you aren't willing to shell out money for a "better" bike.

a friend of mine owns this bike, and we went to Moab Utah for a week of riding. I own a real bike (kona roast) and he rode his wal mart special. He was consistently behind us, we had to stop once a day at least to fix his bike. one day we we had to stop like 5 times to fix his deralluir. we ended up breaking it off with a rock and shortening his chain. His rims were ruined, he broke the quick release front axle, the bearings in his front hub were toast. I think that he got a couple centimeters of suspension movement in the rear. bottom line, i was impressed that it held up as well as it did for the trails we were riding. but instead of having fun, he was working his ass off. this bike is meant for kids on the sidewalk who want to think theyre looking cool. not a *real* bike at all

This bike was a christmas present of 06'. I wanted the xr250 but the store didn't have it. I rode it for the first time and was disappointed when the brakes wear so weak(coverting from rim brakes to disc brakes is so hard). I took it to my local bike dealer and they said I have to break-in the brake pads. I have a 1/8 mile hill and it took me 20 full speed stops to finally get the braking performance that I desired. Then I noticed that the brakes, after being adjusted, stuck in the closed position. this was fixed by putting a spring on the arm of the caliber. This still wasn't enough though. The roll resistance of the Kenda Klaws were of the roof!!!! So I replaced the trash with MTB slicks. This changed everything. My acceleration, braking, handling, and rain control were multiplied by 10!
Don't forget to lube the bike down to give the gears an easier time.

Cons:
Heavy, rock hard seat, SRAM plastic derailer, Tires, Rear stock axle

Comments:
I have had my XR 200 for over a year now and I will say it has been put through its limits... I got the bike at a wal-mart on sale for 110 dollars and it was the only bike at the time that caught my eye. I rode it back the 5 miles from the store to my house and it was like driving a nice car. The ride was smooth and the handling was great, minus the rock for a seat( put on an old pacific seat on it for some cushin). A few months into riding it, I experianced a few problems with the bike. The rear gearset began to stick as when I rode it back from the store with a gallon of milk, the rear gears locked up and sent me head over heels into a church parking lot :) I brought it home and found out that not only the gear set was crapped out, but the rear axle was bent. I ordered new parts from the manufacturer and had the stock gear set replaced with a closer ratio Shimano gear set and a new stock axle. Big mistake on the axle... A few months into riding it more, I found out that the axle was bent again...:( So I called the manufacturer again and ripped into them for there crappy design for a rear axle and ask to send me a new one... Again for the third time I have resently found out that my Axle is bent... So I went to the Bike shop in town and told the guy how crappy my bike's rear end is and if he can do something about it... He did... I just dropped 200 + into my bike, replaceing the SRAM plastic derailer ( Why the heck would someone in there right mind make a key component for a MB in plastic?) with a Shimano "METAL" derailer and got a compition lvl rear rim with Shimano Gear set and a H.D. rear axle... I also Traded in those crappy Kenda Klaws for some Raptors and Redid my brakes. It has done me justice for a Department store bike and I like to put more money into it by replacing the MOZO shocks in the front and getting a compition crank.
Overall, I think this bike is one of those sleeper bikes that if for some money, a couple hundred of money, It will definately pose a threat to some compition with some 600 dollar bikes!

this is an update of my original review and post of the xr 200..for the past month, have dogged the heck outta this low budget wal-goose..and the
jury is in..it has held up real well..certainly not the typical crappy walmart mongoose..we all have ridden or read about..first of all..if possible, buy one in the box, and build it at home....instead of having some dork at wally world do it..or if
you get one all ready built..go thru it,
or have a local bike shop tweak it
for you..before i replaced some of the
components..i tweaked the sram deraillers and promax brakes, and loosen the swing suspension..and
it made a world of difference..rode
the bleep outta it..just whoop on it.and it held up real well..once i adjusted the brake and pads, and rear hubs..it rode just fine..although it is on the
heavy side..the rear wheel only needed a little bit of trueing..but i wore
the black finish off the rim..
as of late, have replaced the front shock, which sucked..with a rock shox
quadra q21r..replace the sram deraillers with a front and back
shimano deore xt..replace the rims
with a mavic..and replaced those
weird kenda klaw tires, with a pair
of wtb velociraptors..so for a couple of
c-notes, upgraded the bleep outtamy xr 200..which i got from wally world at
30 % off..( $ 114.50 ) so now i have a
mongoose that's not bad..and can
hold it's own with bikes in the 400.00
to 600.00 range....also if you're looking at xr 200's at walmart..look
at as many as possible..even at other
stores..as some have decent shimano stuff on them..others have
promax and sram stuff on 'em..and
some xr's are yellow and black..and
some (like mine) are black & red.
all in all..i am very happy with my
xr 200..can't wait to get a 2nd bike
which will probably be the xr 250.
but for the most bang for yer buck,
the stock xr 200, is a good choice,
and even better, if you can find a
100-200 bucks more to upgrade it!

I just bought one for $159. I'm very happy and have been riding all over Knoxville for the last few days. So far so good. The decals were overkill, so I took a few of them off. I'm very impressed with the front shock, seems to be high quality. Disc brake works excellent. Seems great for a budget bike, hope to ride some trails and give it some abuse. We'll see how she holds up after a couple of months. I'd interested in hearing some other stories about this ride.

I got mine, hopped on it and no rear suspension, and two rear tires... So, I did a little research and discovered that Wal-Mart employees are not bike assembly experts. I completely dissembled it, greased all the bearings, pivot bushings, and the "shock" and torqued to specs... rides like a caddy now... no mods yet, but probably won't be cost effective to do too many (first will be the seat). I am just starting out so I think it will be a great beginner bike.

for under 200 bucks,whatta expect?
the xr 200,isn't all that bad, if you can overlook some minuses..first of all, it has those crappy kendra tires,my 200
has two rear tires..the bike was poorly put together, and when i got it home, had to re-do the whole bike. once i did this, then it's not a bad bike, a tad on the heavy side,ok for riding in town, and maybe doing some light-to medium mountain bike riding.mongoose hurts this bike,by cramming it full of lower tier shimano parts, with low budget crank, cassette and rims. mongoose should take a page from wally world,by buying from shimano in bulk, and putting on higher quality parts..hence offering a better bike for the price. some xr 200's had decent parts,etc-while others had deraillers from sram..go figure. mongoose needs to figure out what market they are going after..the low budget under 300 or less bikes, or going after the one thousand dollar plus mt.bike. mongoose can't serve both masters..they could focus on the lower end, offering a really decent bike for under 3 bills, even in the 250 dollar range, with far better tires, drivetrain, and more...and use a better front shock as well..overall, this is a decent bike, as is,but if one spends a little more money, and upgrade from say, bike nashbar-replacing the low end shimano schlock, then people wouldn't be so quick to trash on mongoose. i paid a little over 170 bucks for my xr 200,and have upgraded the rims, deraillers, tires, and crank..and have gotten a pretty decent bike outta it. the stock xr 200,ain't bad,but it pays one to scope out other xr 200's,at wally world..as some are better than others,in terms of features, and the way they were tossed together. for a starter mt bike, this is a decent mongoose..now only if pacific cycle, who owns mongoose, would get their act together, and give mongoose some respect...

pulled the majority of the decals off, replaced the tires, and the front and rear derailers..replaced the front disc brake pads, and tweaked them,as with the rest of the bike. added a decent front -rear bike light, and took off the kickstand. for the moment, i use it to ride to work 8 miles in and back..and on weekends, do some medium mt.bike riding..for heavy duty plowing, use my old pre 1998 as with mongoose d-40r,which is the dump truck of early atb bikes..overall, the xr 200, is not a bad mongoose, unless you're some sort of bike snob. the potential is there..and a better bike for the buck-compared to the mongoose renegade,or the xr 100..

Comments:
This bike is steal if you want a bike that looks great on the outside but is built poorly on the inside. For a kid, it will serve its purpose long and well enough (disregarding the rear shock). However, for an older ride if would fall apart. For example, it you bunny hop up a curb and land short because you looked at some lamborgini coming up the street, you would bend the rim a good centimeter over. Unfortunately there aren't as many good cars around where I live but I still have to true my rear wheel every several weeks. On the rear shock thing, I think they are defective or something on many of the bike because of the mixed comments about them and how when I took it off it all like changed into a bettter one. The drailer is fine, but coudl be better, mine bent in towards my wheel and would bang against the spokes whenever I put it on the first sprocket or whatever. Also, I don't like grip shifters but Walmart only has grip shifters or no shiftage at all. Well if you're on a budget, use this bike and break it before the warranty ends and get different bikes every 3-4 months like me. But I have to admit this bike is great for its price and would be great for moderate trails. Otherwise you might as well buy a better bike or be real good at trueing wheels.

good looking, good for light/medium duty trailbike, probably the best walgoose there is.
Cons:
rear triangle is steel and i cracked it after first trailride. fork is VERY soft after bottoming out on 6 foot drop off.
Time Used:
6 Months
Comments:
great starter bike for beginner/casual rider that understands that you cant thrash this bike to hell nad expect it to emerge unscathed. I ride a bit too hard for it but it has held up well. MUCH better than i thought it would be. cant go wrong with a $150 disposable bike. buy it and ride it till it breaks. then sell or strip and toss broken parts in trash, keep good parts for new one. take new parts off and replace with old, ride till they break, then you have replacement parts that are not damaged. but be careful about this because I hear that they are becoming hard/impossible to find. dont bother with other cheaper bikes, they are an injury or dissappointment waiting to happen. toughest fs bike you can buy without going to a bike shop and buying a hardtail.

Pros:
Nice looking frame, nice geometry, good components
Cons:
softee front fork and cracked rear end
Time Used:
3 Months
Comments:
The rear end cracked after i went on an all day trailride that ended with me going off an 8 foot drop with lots of big rocks. probably the best bike ever made by pacific cycles. bottomed out fork on drop off, but replaceable because of standard headtube dimensions. thinking of goin with a marzocchi bomber. great bike for $150 at walmart. best walmart bike you can buy, PERIOD.

Pros:
everything you need in a good mountainbike that can be upgraded if needed as well
Cons:
all of the components are cheap and need the upgrade, but what do you expect for the price...
Time Used:
6 Months
Comments:
i have ridden this bike on a variety of trails and have had no problems yet. haven't done any 5 to 8 foot drops but then again who really needs to? the frame is a bit heavy but can be worked with. upgrading is recomended, highly. for the price this is an excelent bike for all around riding. i say put another 300 or 400 dollars into repacement parts and you still haven't broken the 600 dollar mark for this bike. great bike for any one

Pros:
The price is the only pro i can think of...$159.00 at Wal Mart
Cons:
The whole bike in general.
Time Used:
Less Than A Month
Comments:
I knew i should've just broke down and bought a real bike. This bike is heavy and cumbersome. It has poor geometry and handle like a school bus. It has the cheapest Shimano components I have ever seen. Within 3 weeks of 10 to 15 mile rides the bottom bracket is already loose and the cranks wobble, and this was from mostly flatland riding.

Pros:
Low price. Looks pretty snazzy. Full suspension. Front disc. Partial aluminum frame.
Cons:
Cheap components. Excessive use of decals.
Time Used:
Less Than A Month
Comments:
Interesting features on a cheap bike. Probably just fine for light use. Frame is aluminum -- sort of -- front forks and rear swing-arm are steel. Weight seems to be close to 40lbs. It will be interesting to see what breaks/wears out first.

Pros:
Great bike for the money. nice frame. black wheels, full suspension and graphics make it look like a much more expensive bike.
Cons:
rear suspension is too stiff. disc brake is weak. cheesy components.
Time Used:
Just Once
Comments:
I paid $159 at wal mart. One ride around the bay and she did great. It is a good bike for the casual rider and you can't beat these kind of features for a bike under 200 dollars. If you wanna look cool and have a decent bike for low cash, get this bike.
