Shimano Deore Mechanical Disc
Number of Reviews:   3
Average Rating:

Shimano's newest disc option for those who want to avoid the downsides of rim-based brakes, and enjoy consistent performance in all conditions. Uses standard levers & cables. Excellent upgrade choice for recreational riders!

Pros: Inexpensive alternative to hydraulic, more braking power than V.
Cons: Brakes were noisy when hot.
Time Used: 3 Months
Comments: After long downhills in Colorado mountains that heated the disk, the rear calipers dragged lightly making an obnoxious scraping sound. After cooling this would go away. Wet disks squeal. These came with the Specialized bike.

Pros: Very cheap alternative to Hydraulics, notable increase in braking power after burn in period
Cons: Horrid squeal when wet, though this went afdter a while. Live with it or learn not to ride in the rain!
Time Used: 3 Months
Comments: Overall a good budget buy, really notice the difference to V-Brakes. Certainly recommended - I've been down the Pyranees (in France) with them and they never let me down. Top buy, go for front and rear for stop-dead braking power!

Pros: These brakes are alot stronger than V-brakes and they take alot less hand pressure than ordinary V-brakes.
Cons: During break-in they started squealing. I re-adjusted and cleaned the rotors and the squealing went away.
Time Used: 3 Months
Comments: These are the first disc brakes I have owned. The cost of the brakes and wheels were less than $250, and I did not have to purchase shifters and brake levers. They are easy to maintain. I would have normally burned through a set of V-brake pads by now, the disc brakes show no wear. They require less hand pressure to activate so in turn my hands are not as tired on a long down hill run. I am totally pleased with my purchase.
