strong fork and frame (steel)adequate shifting. I put street tires on when new making it faster on hard surface.
Cons:
occasional slip out of gear. Slow to obtain smallest gear in cluster. I ajusted rear derailler. It''s a little better.

I believe I only paid 229.00 on sale in 2007. Prices on the 2011 is over 330.00. The newer ones can''t be that much better.

i have been using this bike for a little over a year and i have had to take in to the bike shop in scheels about 10 times because of the chain, deraillers and wheels. i was on my way home from a friends house and as i was crossing the street my chain fell off. i was superman for a moment... then i was on the ground in pain from what later turned out to be a broken wrist. thank god i was wearing my helmet, or i would no longer have any skin on my forehead, as after i hit the ground, i slid down a small hill and skinned my hands and took out a chunk of the helmet. it was a good bike until this happened but now my mom wont let me ride it anymore, so im going to scheels for a new replacement bike.

DON'T BUY THIS BIKE
While I mas riding my new trek 820 for the first time it was not a good first impresion and it would be the last. While rinding I heard a snap then I tried hitting the brakes. But 2 late I got thrown over the handle bars and I was superman flying in the air straight at the cement curb. My head smashed into it (luckly wearing my helmet) and I got all scraped up, was bleeding, ruined my new tee-shirt, and bruised my rib. Then I called the company and they have heard about the problem before. This is dangerous because they kow there selling a bad bike. They said that if you pick up speed this usually happens. That means I can't ride the bike I just have to walk next to it while holding it, fun. Luckly they sent me 2 models up and a new helmet because mine broke in the superman act. Don't buy this bike and if you do wear body armor.

everytime it rains and you get a little mud in the gears, forget trying to shift, you might get lucky to find one gear that holds.
very entry level suspension, i'm assuming it's the same one they use in the wal-mart specials?
if you want a half decent bike, don't buy this one

rides well on hardpack and roads, handles well, frame its self is great, cheap considering,
Cons:
brake systems, chain jumps, rear bearings had to be replaced after six mos. overall crappy components on an excellent steel frame

i was very pleased with the bike at first but now it spends more time in the shop than out its a good entry level bike not intended for real hard use if you are one to just occasionally ride its fine but if you ride 100 plus miles a week go up tp a 4300 w/disk brakes its costs a little more than the 820 and alot less than any comparable competitor but its worth it

i had a P.O.S before this.. and i love it.. i took it on one of the hardest trails around here in AR, and the bike stuck with me the entire way. i was alittle hesitant when i went to do it, but got a good suprise out of it. Also for a steal frame bike.. its light.. as light as you could expect stock.

I love this bike. It's my first MTB, so I probably do not know any better, I'm a big guy, 6 ft 1', 250 pounds, and the bikes seems to do fine. I only use it for exercise and an occasional trail, although I've heard bad things about the altus, and the RST 191 CL, so far the derailleur hasn't missed a gear shift, it's a little loud and a bit slow, the fork, well, it seems softly sprung, it hasn't bottomed but I'd prefer it a bit stiffer. All in all it's just perfect for me, it seems to handle the weight fine, it looks god, it's a Trek, and it was only $200 US, actually $360 Can.
