Pros:
Great value, fully upgradable, easy to maintain, reliable design, 24 speeds.
Cons:
Rear shock and its location, brakes chatter during hard stopping.
Time Used:

Comments:
I bought mine new on eBay for less than $200 including shipping back in 2010.
So far I have put in excess of 1,000 miles on it and am quite impressed with its durability. Yes, there are better designs on the market, but at what price? One could easily spend over $3K on a bike but from a performance perspective it won''t get me there any quicker and I don''t intend to beat it or myself up trying to see how far I can jump or drop it.
With that said, I''ve upgraded the tubes and tires, rear shock w/rebound adjust(Yasusu BNCP-501 $72) added Topeak Defender front and rear fenders ($45) and a rear rack w/zippered pack ($84), installed a 500 lumen front light ($155) and red led light in the rear ($15), added a water bottle rack ($17), tire pump ($30) and installed a shock mounted bracket for my iPhone 4 ($20) so I can run my trip app and headphones.
Next I plan on upgrading the seat and seat post. So for less than $500 total I have a bike that meets all of my requirements, is dependable and looks great to boot.
As for the shifters, spend the $$ and invest in getting it tuned which is money well spent and will alleviate many of the complaints I''ve read in this forum. This is the first thing I had done and after 2 years of constant riding, still shifts flawlessly. So far my only complaint is the disc brakes chatter during hard stops as I decelerate through 5 mph. This is more an annoyance issue with the noise that it is a safety or performance factor.
Overall, I would recommend this bike to anyone looking for the best value for their $$$>

I''ve had this bike for about 4 years and have put about 3000 miles on it. Its very important to get everything adjusted properly to know how good this bike really is. I use White Lithium grease on everything, incl axles, and it just glides. The brakes are a bit of a pain to adjust but once you have it down it gets easy. The brakes work awesome and it shifts great when everything is adjusted correctly. Haven''t had many problems with it overall. I''ve only had to replace the rear shock, a couple cables and a few sets of tires. The wheels have been good though I don''t jump it. Only thing I''ve done hard to it is a 3 foot drop onto concrete a few times right after I got it. Landings were smooth and it was fine after. I''ve straightened the wheels once and am just getting to the point of needing to do some minor adjustments on them. The brake calipers are lower quality but they work great.

Pros:
The Promax disc brakes are surprisingly good, when set up properly. They have good modulation and feel and can really pull you up quickly. However, some people report that they are prone to fade over long down hill sections.
The shifters (trigger shifters and Shimano derailleurs) are very good and shift crisply when they are properly set up.
Gearing is good. The 3rd ring has 48 teeth so high gear is good for paved surfaces. Low gear is adequate for most casual off-road rides.
The tires are cheap Kendas but are actually rather a good compromise between road and light trail use.
The head angle is tight and this gives the bike very nimble & responsive handling, at the expense of being skittery in a straight line if the surface is uneven.
Cons:
Wheel rims are ''single wall'' and will probably buckle from a big hit,
The fork is limited in travel (75mm) and has no real adjustment (the spring ‘preload’ has negligible effect).
Water bottle position is not good - the front wheel hits the bottle when the fork compresses. You need to get a handle bar or seat mount for your water bottle.
Rear suspension is a very bouncy 4 bar design. You''ll lose a lot of energy in pedal-induced suspension bob.
The shock is very low grade (similar to other dept. store bike rear shocks). The 750 lb spring is okay for most adults (up to around 200lbs weight). After a bit of use, the shock does not dampen very well (take it out and compress and extend it by hand to see what I mean). The shock is mounted in a silly position – its gets dirt/mud on the shaft (which will wear seals out very quickly). Consider using a shock boot (tie wrap a piece of inner tube over it for a cheap solution).
The seatpost is low grade (Kalloy 30.0mm x 300mm). It is a very weak single bolt clamp design that is prone to movement and flogging out, especially if you are a heavier rider. It is a danger if you are over about 180 lbs. I weigh 180 and the seatpost was okay for me but two have bent for a heavier friend (we had identical Blackcombs). The fault occurs because the lower rail cups bend (they are only pressed steel), and the seat starts to move in the clamp.
The bike is quite heavy. The rear suspension arms are steel.
Suspension pivots are plastic bushes. They will wear out over time and the rear suspension will suffer from flex and movement.

Comments:
With the Blackcomb, you certainly get what you pay for. Nonetheless, it does have a legitimate niche in the biking spectrum.
The head angle is tight and this gives the bike very nimble & responsive handling, at the expense of being skittery in a straight line if the surface is uneven.
The frame size is approximately a medium and suits someone up to about 5’ 11" in height.
The Blackcomb is not a serious off-road bike. It will not take rough treatment very well and those plastic bushes will flog out over time. However, if your use is mainly on-road with the occassional bit of trail riding then this bike will serve you well.
For more off-road oriented use, it is a viable starter bike. It will give you lots of fun as you master the basics and decide whether you want to get more into the sport. It will also educate you about what you might want to look for in your next bike. However, as you get better, you will very quickly encounter the limitiations of the Blackcomb''s design (especially the suspension). Also, it is unlikey to last long if you are going off-road frequently.

bought the bike from Wal-Mart for around $300 in ''08. Surprisingly, it was actually assembled OK - I still checked every bolt, tho. First thing I did was replace the seat. Second thing was ride it all arond town. The rear derailleur was tolerable at first, but wanted to jump to different gears every now and then. I adjusted the outer adjustment screw where the cable goes in to the rear derailleur, and it shifted flawlessly after that. I ride 10+ miles every other day, and have peformed minimal maintence on the bike with minimal problems, so, as long as you keep the derailleur adjusted properly and oiled with light chain oil, and cleaned, etc. It''s actually a decent bike for the loot.

Built very solidly, decent parts, ok price for what you get, lets me try out high end features for cheap, genuine low-medium-end dual suspension bike?
Cons:
It is heavy, required lots of tweaking to have it operate smoothly, the back suspension does seem a bit mushy, handle grips aren''t comfortable
Time Used:

Comments:
I can''t really complain about the bike considering it was only $300 and had features I wanted to try out. The main problem with it was the setup. The brake rotors were warped a bit and were squeaking, so I had to adjust that (took forever to get them righted). The handles are not very comfortable because they have mongoose printed on them, engraved in a hard plastic (ouch). Gloves? When pedaling really hard the rear does travel down, but I''m not sure how this compares to higher end bikes. I imagine it''s similar. The front suspension and forks are ok, but I''ve already found if you plan on running off drops that there''s not that much travel (but the forks are good quality I feel). I do feel the bike is safe enough to use on off-road trails and I feel confident on it. It''s probably not as smooth, fast or comfortable as a higher end bike. For trail riding though, it''s hard to beat the price if you don''t like your spine rattled out of your body if you''re taking a long distance ride. The suspension works well for that. I just wouldn''t expect this bike to last my interest in biking. I''m already wanting something lighter and crafted to a higher level. But for $300... hard to beat this over those cheaper bikes they sell that have dual suspension. I enjoy riding (I ride almost every day) it and I''m not sorry I bought... just need $1,000 or so dollars now.
In Walmart I demo''d the mongoose XR250 which was (I think) $200 vs the $300 Blackcomb. Suspension on the xr250 was clearly inferior, very springy - no damping, and the bike just had very poor handling qualities - this I could tell just from a cruise around the aisle. the blackcomb, except for its extra weight, handles like a much more expensive bike. my main complaint is that the shifting is very sloppy. i don''t see many others commenting on this, so i guess it is just a tuning issue. but since i like the bike so much, i think i''ll probably buy some shimano deore derailuers online and have them put on when i do have the bike tuned up. as the derailuers are cleary a weak link on bike, along with the pedals. my only other comment would be that having now owned a full suspension bike, i''d say they are ok, but for general riding around on roads and not super tough trails at an intermediate level, i don''t see the great need for it.

I bought this form wallmart at $229, tried to tune it myself but it needed a lot of gear tuning, a lot of brakes adjustment and tightening all the nuts and bolts. So i took it to a shop to have it setup properly. After that it rode great.
Took it to a nearby mountain bike trail and it performed very well but the rims were not very round after that. very disappointed. in conclusion this is a good starter mountain bike if you are not going to treat it hard. if you are going to hit the trails often then spend more to get something more robust

i bought a silver blackcomb to replace my old S60 that i broke... again...
I''ve not been very lucky with the derailleurs provided by Pacific Cycle, I''ve busted about 6 of em. and 3 Derailleur hangers... and i was concerned about the blackcomb''s lack of a derailleur hanger which protects the frame in case the derailleur gets mangled. my concern became reality this very morning as i mangled the derailleur and took the frame with it... Pacific Cycle should really consider giving this model a Hanger, or at least super reinforcing the rear frame.
ok aside from the derailleur issue, the bike rides nicely. some people on here say it''s heavy but i don''t mind or even notice this. the bike is a lot less jittery an easier to keep on a straight line then my S60 or S40 but it''s still a tad jittery at times. the disk breaks seam to provide plenty of stopping power. i like how the suspension is fairly soft, makes the ride a bit less harsh. the seat is a pain in the butt "but hey what retail store bikes seat isn''t a pain in the butt" the best thing is that it was cheap to purchase and it feels fairly sturdy and handels nicely.

When Wal-Mart gets bikes either employees put the together or the hire out for assembly. The people assembling the bikes is usually a lawnmower repair place or a diy guy so make sure you tighten everthing. Make sure brakes are set property, derailer is set, quick releases are tight seat handle bars pedals, rear suspension EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

Let me start by saying I weigh 285 lbs and ride singletracks trails in south Louisiana. I had this bike over 1 year and its awesome. I had to change the derailer after a stick got hung uo in spokes and broke it. Rear suspension is a little soft but tighten the preload spring and it gets pretty good feel to it do the same for the front forks. I ride 10 to 20 miles a week on off road trails with 1 foot jumps and 2 foot drops and never had a problem. This bike is solid. Don''t listen to the LBS people that think that only bike shop bikes are good. Those same people are the ones in school that made fun of kids with cheap clothes and just never grew up. Matter of fact a I brought it by a Local bike shop for a tune up and the guy was impressed with the bike considering it was from wal mart. A little fine tuning and upgrades makes it a nice full suspension for a good price. The wheels would be my first upgrade but wait till they fail. I love this bike

All around good bike. I have more than 300 miles so far on this bike; all paved/gravel trail miles. The brakes will stop you about as quick as you''d expect for disc brakes. Although the front brakes were "preloaded" kind of weak - these lite-loaded suspenders are a little bit of a problem when you''re hard pumping, they are great for quick hard stops/bumps. Rear suspension tensil strength is good, but the suspension components gives the rear-end a bit of a tinkertoy loose feel. If it feels like a total piece of junk... you need to make some adjustments. I''ve had to make adjustments on every ride. Then again I''m picky on how my ride goes! Good for easy trail riding.

worst product i own. mainly the reason i regret buying this bike is the brakes. they work alright when you first get the bike, but they fade quickly. i rode it one day on an old fire road and coming back down the mountain it cooked both brakes. nows, im not even kidding, you can get a vice grip to hold the brake lever, but it still wont stop you from 5mph in less than 20 ft. i have ditched the shitty brakes for some old avid v brakes which are work 27 times better. front shock, too soft for anything other than sidewalk riding. derailleur, not accurate and breaks easily. bottom bracket, just like the brakes, wears out quickly. also, the wheels bend easily.
pros: the wtb tires are great, except the rear wears out relatively quickly (i never skid on pavement). the shifters are all you need on a bike, comfortable, durable, and accurate. also, you can take this frame and beat the hell out of it, but since its made from concrete, you should be able to.
my setup: rockshocks judy tt front fork, avid v-brakes, shimano lx rear derailer, sella italia flight gel seat. gt straigh handelbars and stem. profile design classic bar ends, bontrager select grips, original shimano shifters.
in my setup the bike is...good. it shifts well, brakes alright, and soaks up enough of the rough stuff for an average rider. I do love the fact that i can take it out and beat it up, but it still comes back for more. that being said, i would, if you have the money, spend at least 450 on a bike that is solid from the start. the only reason i kept it was because it was full suspension and i had parts laying around that i could use to make the bike acceptable.

If you want a nice and dependable bike to start out with to get in shape and explore the great outdoors this is an excellent choice. It''s reasonably priced and styled nicely. So it''s a little heavy, if your looking for a workout and want to get in better shape it''s no big deal. If your racin and bettin the house, go with something lighter and much more expensive. BTW the red knob on the calipers is to center the pads over the rotor. Spin the tire and turn the knob back and forth until the wheel spins freely with no noise. To adjust the brakes look at the back of the caliper and you will see a screw, turn it in for more brake out for less.

Well first off I read the input here from everyone and saw it was mostly positive.
I knew after looking the bike over that it would need some upgrades! But at $250 discounted why not play with it.
My other local alternative was a DB @ $600 and it wasn't much better with value components.
Done a few upgrades so far.
Right off the seat had to go!! After the 1st day of riding my ass was killing me.
I did invent in a Cat Eye Enduro 8 Computer/Speedo.
The rims made me nervous so I found a set of Alex DP17's mounted with WTB Velociraptors at http://bikeisland.com/ for $120 free shipping!
Why nervous? At this price usually the 1st sacrifice is the rims and tires.
Also the Alex DP17 is a sharp looking rim and double walled. Probably a lil lighter as well?
Replaced the small plastic metal caged peddles with all aluminum Odyssey Triple Traps for $20. BIG bear traps but I have a size 12 EEE hoof.
I am looking into a air shock for the rear suspension possibly in the future if it don't set me back a wad.
Was kind of a odd place to put the rear shock I thought!
I'll try the brakes for awhile and see if I wanna upgrade them or not.
Mechanical disc brakes are the way to go BTW!
These babies stop on a dime wet or dry.
Far cry from the V and C brakes I was used to!!!
Bottom line:
Sharp looking well built welded frame...fully upgradeable...decent components...Mongoose name thats been around for quite awhile now is what drew me to this bike.
I don't plan to beat the crap out of this bike...I'm 43 and just want a bike for logging roads...road riding and maybe a river trail now and then.
I do Wildlife Photography and need some exercise so it's nice to have a bike that can get ya into some rough areas with some comfort.
My BMX'in and beating the crap out of a bike and myself are over.
NOT gonna tell ya what to get but if you don't have a wad of dinero to spend on a full suspension bike this is worth checking into.
Wallymart has jacked this bike up to $300 in my area here in NY but if ya watch they have one on sale now and then for around $250 or less.

I've used this bike for a year now and I love it. I wanted to buy a more expensive bike but my budget wouldn't allow it, so I bought the Blackcomb. I've made a few upgrades and I have had the bike "tuned in" at a local bike shop (TJ's Bikes)and it rides great on the trails. I've dished out allot of abuse on this thing and it handled it just fine. If you know how to ride and you keep it properly maintained it's a great bike for the money.

I picked my up @wal-mart for $154.00. So for RST adjustable suspension fork, WTB Speed-v saddle and Velociraptor folding tires, Shimano Pro-max brakes and altus derailluers. Along with a Cane Creek headset. Watch buying one from a department store. They assembly them quickly and without properly adjusting anything. Your derailluer system isn't set and as I read earlier, the brake may or may not be set right. I ridden this bike in snow, rain and today in clear skies and it's handling quite well. My only real discomfort is the handlebar; I prefer flatbar over the riser. But for the price I paid, not quite the junk some people make it out to be. But I won't recommend it only cause it came from a department store. I still had to tune these bikes up, so I don't feel their "free" assembly is even worth it.

Ok I got this bike for free from a friend. It had the dérailleur exploded into the rear wheel and the chain was kinked to hell. I have a ton of bikes (ride a kona roast converted singlespeed daily, all top notch components $1200 worth and jump a hoffman flash real american made bmx old school model with all top line components, plus few more) so I had parts laying around to toss this thing together. Well the parts I put on the bike are worth far more than the bike (shimano cheap deore dérailleurs, azonic saddle, azonic stem, kmc 9 speed chain x9000???, better cassette 11-32, rockshox adjustable shock w/ adjustable preload and compression rates and took all the bs off) The bike is now rideable and for sh!ts I rode it about 30 miles. It is heavy as hell! Double the weight of my baby my Kona, and the suspension design is horrible, it bobs constantly when pedaling. I already blew up the front shocks in a few small drops and bunnyhops, the discs are absolute garbage (used to avids) and are impossible to set right for any length of time. The grips actually hurt (god i love my odi lock ons and old school amy's ) If you just want to ride and know nothing about bikes this thing is OK for that but if you want to get into serious mountain biking go buy a $400 On One or KHS and you will be much happier. Oh yeah the pedals are soooo loose now on the spindles I think they might explode and I feel unsafe cornering on this thing, Feels like it wants to plow out of turns. I would let me girlfriend ride it for excercise and I will break it further if I am bored but I just can't believe this thing is $300 at wallyworld. It is worth $150 at most and if you ride it at all you will have to replace stuff to make it ridable. Don't plan on stopping well either, it won't no matter how I set the brakes they are just bad.. Time to hit the doubles in the backyard and enough about this wallgoose. Good for nubs and bad for anyone who knows better. Thats that.

what the hell do these teenagers know! I have ridden for 24 years. I have owned and ridden, GT, Giant, Specialized, K2, Trek, Cannondale,Huffy, Freespirit, Schwinn, you name it, I've tried it. I grew up in Colorado with trails in my back yard, 6 foot drops are what we did for fun. I have had the opportunity to destroy nearly every bike on the market. The componants are cheap. But the whole bike is cheap. If you can get past the weight, this bike is not bad. To get this thing dialed in, you will spend a few hundred and be near the price of a higher end bike. But I am over 200 lbs., I ride hard, and have punished this thing, and it has taken the abuse. If you want a high end bike, pay a high end price. If you want the best possible value for your dollar, get the blackcomb and service/maintain it right. I have never had a bike with perfect componants, and I have tried them all. You dumb asses that expected a dialed in downhill racer for $300, give me a shout, I got some land in Florida for you. You kids with your pup eperience, go break some other bikes that you paid twice the price for, and see how this one looks.

Tonight after work I went into Wal mart to look for a bike to ride to work ( I only live about 1 1/2 away) so I could save gas and get some exercise.
Well I came across the Mongoose Blackcomb and seen that it was 287.77 and me just being me thought wow that must be the best bike they have here. Then I seen the same bike only priced at 78.88 and I checked everything sure enough it was the same bike. I grabbed and cause i figured if it was once 200.00 it would be one heck of a deal. Any way I bought the bike and brought it home and when I got home I was taking off the price bar code sticker and under the first sticker was the 287.88 bar code sticker. I was shocked at first I don't know what to think maybe an employee changed the sticker and was gonna buy it I don't know. Well the whole reason i joined the site was for a little help. The bike was pre assembled so when I got home and took the manual off and the cardboard in the front wheel I noticed a little red sticker on the disc break that reads " After installation turn red knob to center rotor. I turned it a little but really didn't know what to do. So I took it for a spin and it seems like the front wheels brake is on. I don't know which way or what to do to loosen the front wheel up. Can anyone help I love this bike and if I really got the good deal that i think then thats great by the way this is the first bike Ive bought or ridden since i was a kid and I'm now 32. Thanks for your help in advance. I you need pictures of what I'm talking about I will post them.
I just wish I knew the exact way to adjust the front wheels red knob it makes a squeaking sound and the wheel slows down like the brake is being applied.

All in all the bike for me has been good although I have gotten a more costly bike since then but I still take the blackcomb out for rides. Seems as though I have to tighten the gear and brake cables every 3 to 4 weeks or so and chain and gears need lots of lube. Had to buy a better seat as the stock seat was a pure pain in the ass. Good bike all in all. If someone does plan of buying this bike just make sure when you buy it that all the cables are tight and everything is working correctly and that you maintain the bike. If you do so this bike will last a while.

The only suggestion I have when purchasing this bike is put it together yourself. I found a WalMart that had it in a box and I put it together myself... No offense, but WalMart workers are, well, Walmart workers. Put it together yourself. I ride it almost every day and have had NO PROBLEMS with it. Everywhere I go it turns heads too! I have to admit, I took off all the decals, and the reflectors. I actually fooled a rider who was riding a much more expensive bike, who sold bikes as well... at first glance he thought it was a Santa Cruz..., he,he... this bike handles great, has great power and is a blast to ride. I would recommend it to anyone...

Good bike for low cost off road adventures. I found that the front end would wash out in sand due to the front tire. I removed the tire and installed it in the opposite rotational direction and it improved ten fold. Do this or get a different front tire and the problem pretty much goes away. I don't know if reversing the tire negatively affects the tire performance clearing mud so check that out for your self. Rode it hard for over two years without a problem. Moved up to an Iron Horse Warrior DS Pro recently which is a much better ride all-around.

Read all the reviews. I checked the assembly and set up and only had to adjust the front dr. Having been a former roadie/track guy I liked the suspension. After 60 min in the saddle on rough terrain my backside and shoulders felt great. It is what it is, nothing is top-of-the-line and your not paying for it either. But it does what it designed and priced to do. I replaced the pedals with Forte's and shortened the handlebars and put barend/grips on. I have not had any problems shifting under power or with extreme rear swingarm movements. I weigh 170# and ride fairly aggressively and the bike has met my expectations. One of my first suspension upgrades will be to a rear Fox air-over-air shock with lock-out ability to lessen the power loss with out of saddle pedaling. It is fairly portly on the weigh scale, but is a soft-tale. The brakes have good feel and power. Overall the bicycle performs well with the components installed. I road a companions Diamondback full-suspension that was 4 times the price of mine and I couldn't tell the difference in handling. Time will tell, but a good value in my book.

Pros:
Good components for the price range.
Cons:
Heavy, front fork and rear shock need to be replaced for any real biking.
Time Used:

Comments:
I've had this bike for over a year now, and have written a couple of reviews. True, it's not for the hardcore mountain biker, throwing themselves from cliffs, but it's great for the rest of us.
The components NEED to be adjusted once you buy it. The people at wallworld usually don't know what they're doing (there's a Blackcomb at a store near me with the fork on backwards). Any complaints about shifting problems, chain throwing, can all be adjusted just like any other bike.
Yes, the fork does suck, but can be easily replaced.
The rear shock also is bad, but it can be replaced with one with rebound adjust. I replaced it, and it pedals great. No more bobbing. By the way, you get bobbing on most other inexpensive full suspension bikes because the rear shocks are simply springs, too.
Over a year and still going strong.

Looks Like a serious bike(but its not). Nice components for the price. Rapid Fire shifter, and disk brakes, which i didn't think were all the bad.
Cons:
Tank of a bike, pretty heavy. Forks are crap, shifting laggy and clunky, and not very responsive. Plastic pedels. Light trail only! Rear shocks for looks only.

I had this bike for a little over a weak before i broke it. Do NOT even dream of taking this bike down any rugged terrain. I went down a slight rocky grade and blew the forks out, and the right pedel broke. Rear shocks sucks, way to play, pedel bop is wicked bad.

I needed a comfortable bike for neighborhood and non-competition trail riding. I couldn't beleive I could get a 4 bar link rear shock, dual disc brake, rapid fire shifter, aluminum frame bike for under 300 dollars. I looked at many bikes, both in walmart and bike shops. Very simply this is the best deal going. YES it needs to be setup at a bike shop by pros (who probably get irritated seeing such a good bike costing less than their profit margin alone), and NO it is not a serious racing bike. BUT... the components are fine for the kind of riding I stated earlier.

Pros:
front/rear disc brakes which work very well, reliable crank/bearing set and shimano shifters.
Cons:
After buying this bike, I replaced the factory seatpost with a Thomson 410mm x 30mm dia. seatpost. I also replaced the stem with a Delta stem extended which raises the handlebars adjustably up to 3". These parts will set you back about $110.00 or so at typical website prices at bike parts websites. Otherwise, all stock.

Comments:
About 2 weeks after buying this bike and after I had replaced the seatpost with a Thomson 410mm x 30mm seatpost, I rode it 400mi from South Bend, IN to St. Louis, MO over 6 days of rough constant riding of about 12 hours a day, sometimes on gravel or crummy choppy road shoulder, and this bike performed extremely well. Especially would like to say the wheels held up very very well. The wheels stayed very true and there was no spoke breakage, even with the nonstop punishing treatment. I would highly highly recommend this bike. It proved itself to me. It's reliability stood up to the test of rough/gravel roads, outrunning dogs (stomping on the crankset many times to jet away from dogs) and very reliable wheels. All in all a very great value for the money from Mongoose.
I read a lot of reviews before purchasing one, and was a little worried about the assembly quality and the weight. I am a novice rider so I was not too concerned about outgrowing the bike easily. I checked out one that was scratch and dent free, got it home (inflated the tires at a gas station on the way back) spent an afternoon checking that everything was straight, properly tightened and adjusted (brakes, handlebars, positioning brakes and shifter, cleaned the discs with alcohol, etc.). After a couple test rides and everything fine I must say the bike is a great value for its price. After about 30 miles I heard a squeaking noise but that was due to a loose crankset nut ( the only thing I didn't check the 1st day didn't have the wrench for it), I just bought the appropiate wrench and tightened it, no more squeaks.
I do about 5-10 mile rides and the bike handles and brakes very well, no squeaks. I was used to riding motorcycles, so this bike feels extremely light for me in comparison, In terms of lifting the front wheel or climbing, well guess I have to practice more, improve my technique and get a little stronger, not whine about 3-5 extra pounds on the bike. I replaced the seat the 2nd. day with a wider Bell gel one (with integrated led light for night rides coming back from the gym), put a bottle carrier and electronic speedo/odo. I will upgrade to a monkeylite handlebar, better grips and bar ends and maybe a lighter seat post to help shed some weight, and some cheap aluminum pedals to improve the strenght, I don't trust the plastic/metal ones after reading the reviews, althought they are light and have held very well so far. I use a normal Bell rack to carry it around, just make sure you use an extra strap to wrap around the big square tube frame. I like the fact that it is upgradable (seen some on the net with different shocks and stuff), but so far after riding rigid bikes, the double suspension feels really nice, although the adjustments don't make much difference.
You can't beat the features for the price ($300 tax incl.), and If you know someone who works at Wallyworld, you could get it for $235 using the employee discount. Too bad they don't make a 24" version for my wife.

Lighter than my old bike (15 years old), dual suspension, disk brakes, thumb shifters, many metal components, decent looks, low price for features and performance, solid body.
Cons:
Put together by some crack head at Wal-Mart. Needs some minor adjustments. Sloppy craftsmanship. Suspension doesn't seem all that hearty... easy to bottom out, but better than cheaper stuff by far.

Comments:
The one on the bottom of the racks was damaged (shifter, chain, rear derailer and other), but there was one on the top. I had to wait to get it down, but was glad I did. I traded a the seat off the bottom one for the one I got (had a tear in it). I did a lot of research and came on the conclusion that I didn't need to spend a whole lot of money on a super nice bike. I've abused my old Huffy over the years and it's held up ok, but has needed repairs. There's a lot of added complication with this bike, but I think it's a fairly good deal! One thing I notice is it's not tweaked well, which one would expect. I'm surprised by the quality of the low end parts attached to it, but I'm sure I'll be replaced some things sooner or later (cheap plastic related parts, but I think the wheels and stuff will be the first thing to need help). Manual doesn't explain how to adjust the front suspension or perform any important maintenance... which is fine, I'll learn. It's a joy to ride (even though it's hard to pull up the front wheel to pop over things). I'm looking forward to abusing the hell out of it.

Pros:
This is an ALOMOST completely upgradeable bike. It has a descent drive train with mostly Shimano parts. It has a descent WTB saddle and good set aggressive of WTB tires. The frame is stiff and responsive. Honestly, that’s about it.
Cons:
For starters it comes with only single walled rims (easy to taco and/or bend). The crank set and BB (Bottom Bracket) on the bike are about as cheap as they come. The handle bars are heavy and awkward, and the brakes are the bear minimum. As for the front shock I didn't even give it a chance. One of the worst thing is you cannot upgrade the 6" rear POS shock. by POS I mean Piece Of Shit.

I have been a triathlete for over a year now and was recently thrown in to mountain biking by a very close friend. I immediately fell in love. I made a hasty choice in purchasing the Mongoose Blackcomb but have learnt a lot in the process. Shortly after purchasing the Blackcomb over the internet I had my doubts. Everything is all about research into what you want. What I wanted was a FS(Full Suspension) bike to stick with me for a long time that I can continue to upgrade as my skill improved. With the Blackcomb you can upgrade to an extent. The biggest turn off for me was the inability to upgrade the 6" rear shock. I bike at Lincoln Parish Park in Louisiana. It has many uphill battles. I love every minute of biking but right now I consider my Blackcomb a medicine ball compared to what I could be riding. Without a better rear shock you lose a shit-ton of power from pedal to wheel torque. Overall this is a great bike for the money but that’s it. Do not expect to upgrade to a $2000 mountain bike from a $300 Mongoose frame set up. For reference I have upgraded the front shock (Spinner Aeris), the wheels (Rhino lites) and of course those god awful grips (anything other than what they where). If i had to recommend this bike to anyone it would be to the EASY mtb rider with not many uphill battles not seeking a move up anytime soon or the rich, health conscious commuter with money to blow. If you have any questions on some upgrades or on anything about frames I definitely have my opinions. Please contact me TekDog211@aol.com. I hope this review has been helpful. I;m giving this bike three stars due to it's limitations.

I love this Bike! I was really not planning on buying a full suspension bike. After doing my homework on this bike I had a pretty good idea on what to expect. I did go to about four different Walmart stores to check it out because some of the bikes are assembled by chimpanzee's! I did look over my bike very well before I purchased it. After reading many reviews on this bike I knew it would be best to make sure everything was properly tightend and the shifters were working properly. After doing so and getting the seat hieght, bars and brake levers in a comfortable position, I took a few basic tools with me when I rode incase I had to do any adjusting. If you are not familiar doing adjustments, take it to the shop and have them give it a once over. The shifters do work great once they are dialed in! It will be money well spent. I used to race pro mx and also raced a bit of mountain bike just for fun about ten years ago, so I knew I was going to be pretty hard on the bike. The front fork is just too soft for serious riders but not bad for the occasional rider. I will upgrade the fork and maybe the shock. I do like the shock but it needs better adjustability. Again, great for the price of the bike!I really like the bike for supercross style single track and technical trails or really anything. The front end does have a tendency to want to wash out in gravel conditions. I will try a different front tire. I think the tires are more for loose sand. The only spooky thing that has happened is that the brakes had a tendancy to lock up or not release when they were supposed to. Break-in and adjustment took care of it. Really, the bike works very well as a whole. I do check my fasteners and spokes pretty often and the bike has dished out everything I have done. Yes I did bend my front wheel a bit. A few too many drop offs. I will do some other upgrades to the bike, stem, bars, crank, wheels and brakes to lighten it up a bit. The chain also just for insurance. Once I do this I am sure it will be on par next to $3000-$4000. bike. Serious drop-offs do require suspension upgrades. For the agressive novice or occasional rider, this bike is awsome. I hope my review is benificial in one way or another.

great bike for the value, i ride 10-20 miles a day, and the only thing that sucks is your butt pain. brakes have awesome stopping power (when adjusted properly) and even though the brakes squeal with very light pressure after first 15 miles it goes away when you add a little more brake pressure, very easy to adjust everything when first bought it. Definately go for this bike you need disc brakes if you do any riding in wet weather, they work as if they were dry except they squeal! I've had this bike for a year now, and had no major problems whatsoever. The guy below is just a local bike shop elitest who never owned the Blackcomb. His language proves it. It's a good starter bike, and it can take just about every upgrade you get at the shops. It's way above the level of the 'regular' Walmart bikes that people hate. I took this bike to a new bike shop by my house, and the owner was impressed. He said it's probably the only walmart bike that's up to par with bike shops.

i got this bike over the summer because the previous mtn. bike was complete crap. i was hesitant to buy the Blackcomb because the bike i had before was wallyworld, and it what crap. however, after looking around extensivly, i found that this bike was definatly the best deal.
some people say weight is horrible, but i say they are just being sticklers. the frame is built to be strong, somewhat like a downhill bike, and those bikes are nowhere close to being light. the brakes were getting me worried after about 2 weeks because they made this horrific griding sound, but over time (a couple of weeks) it went away. i guess it was just a wear in. as it is they are good brakes, especially for the price. Price of $300 is great. lucky for me i am a bike nut, so i had some old parts that were actually upgrades for the bike, like pedals, handlebar grips, and some other small things. I also spent 8 bucks on a pair of lizardskins for the front shock because i have had problems in the past with shocks becoming shot bc of dirt and other crap.
one other thing is i am about to upgrade the bottom brakcet. this is jsut becuase i ride every mtn. bike i have as hard as it will let me, and the crappy bottom braket that came with this bike dosent work for me. probable will for you.

I'm back with an update on my Blackcomb (had it for eight months to be exact). I read the last reviewer, and I'm disappointed. He's comparing the new bike to the Blackcomb. His new bike is a hardtail, no rear suspension. Of course he can ride faster on it, because a hardtail is lighter than a full suspension like the Blackcomb.
Also, his new bike (aside from the front air shock) isn't much of an upgrade from what the BLackcomb has. I've spent a little over 200 bucks upgrading my bike http://gallery.mtbr.com/showphoto.php/photo/28312/cat/500/ppuser/299700 and it has much better components now than his (again aside from the front shock). For me, I'd rather have coil shocks, they'll last longer than air.
If you want a full suspension bike, and don't mind a dept store model, than get this bike. I've upgraded with second to top of the line Shimano front and rear derailleurs, and dual control shift/brake levers. It can take any upgrade out there (except for zero stack or integrated headsets), unlike most other dept store bikes. I'm not limited on upgrades with this thing.
But, if you want a hardtail, go ahead. When you go offroad, don't forget to lift yourself off the seat or else you'll lose control when the rear wheel starts catapulting you upwards when you hit a good bump.
I bought this bike to get into biking and improve my fitness level. The brakes and rear derailer would never stay in adjustment, the chain broke the 5th time out. It's thrown the chain more times than I care to remember.
My wife was tired of all the problems and told me to get something that's going to do me good. I purchased a Gary Fisher Cobia 29er and couldn't be happier. I can't bike enough now.
I went out with a friend with a Blackcomb who normally would beat me on fitness alone when I had mine, now I can keep up without a problem.
I know it's cheap, but run away and don't look back.

Excellent RST front fork for the price. Rear cog runs 11-34 teeth great for climbing, most wally-world bikes run 11-28 in the rear. WTB saddle and tires. Easily upgradeable parts. Excellent overall value at $300.00
Cons:
This bike is great, but the disc brakes do have a tendency to squeal. Rear shock is a basic run of the mill shock, but easy to upgrade. Also the crank set runs 28-38-42 I believe. If you don't want to kill yourself going up hills do what I did & upgrade crank to a 22-32-44 tooth. I also upgraded tires to WTB Timberwolves, the stock tire tread leaves something to be desired for traction. Some people cry like babies about the weight of this bike so that may be a set back for you. About 39 lbs. Bike weight has never been an issue for me.

Pros:
I first purchased the Mongoose 250 Model at Walmart and was not satified at all. They let me upgrade to the Black Tooth with no questions asked. The bike handeled much better. It has a mixed group of lower line quality parts from shimano, suntour, KMZ with moderetly good
shimono shifters and has disk brakes. The bike looks very goog for the price and I understand it is upgradable componentwise. The big problem is the assymbly and tuning. I say this in the pros section because after 3 weeks of trying to get information on tuning the bikes parts from Walmart and Mongoose I went crazy trying to get gear shifting smooth, brakes, and other adjustments. I took the bike back and again had no problem exchanging the lemon bike for another. Walmart stood behind the 90 day return policy.
Cons:
First and most important take the bike to a qualified bike shop and have it tuned. The first bike had the wrong size bolt on the quick release hub so you had to pry the forks appart to get the front wheel back on. This caused the forks to stick in the low position when I would hit a good bump. Because of the first sloppy assymbly the front chain overran the top gear and scrached up the crank on the derailer side. The rear Pro Max disk breaks on both bikes are very in-effective, but the poor manual included with the bike claims it takes several weeks to brake in the brakes. The handelbars require an extra set of part if you want to adjust them ( read in earlier review ).

As a rider of a Trek 2300 many years ago (Price invested $1700 - a dream bike) you get what you can pay for. The second Blackcomb will go directly to a pro bike shop to get it right ($40 full detail). In all I like the bike for the price I can now afford. Remember to have it tuned by a pro right away and check it over good for nick and scraches if you buy it at wally world and test ride it to see if it is functioning ok before you buy it. Also know you will get virtually no lituriture on the components with this bike and the manual is a 1 for all bikes book with poor accuracy for the bike you have bought. I may update my review after I have hade the exchanged bike tuned. wally world does honor it return and exchange policy.

I've had this bike for over four months, now. It's held up well, it's great to ride on, if you're used to the cheaper wallyworld bikes. It rides as well as a decent bike shop model, if you don't mind the weight of the bike. For the price, it can't be beat.
I've been on bicycling.com and people on there have said they'd prefer a bike shop hardtail to this. Great if you want a sore rear end ("forget full suspension, float over the seat on a hardtail" is what was said to me. No thanks, I'm not ten anymore on a bmx). I like advances in design, and full suspension is the way to go. I've added a rockshox rear shock w/rebound adjustment (no more bobbing), a ritchey wcs stem, and replaced the crappy pedals with all metal ones. I'm glad I bought the Blackcomb, and I get my parts from bike stores, not wallyworld.
By the way don't replace any brake, or gear, cables with the ones from wallyworld. I made the mistake when I had to, and I had an extra cable lying around. Wallyworld cables stretch way too much, and it makes the brake spongy, not at all like it should be. I did the smart thing, then, replaced the cable with one from a bike shop, and had braking power again.

when i was out looking for a new mtb my friends were telling me about this one right her. At first, i wasa little bit skeptical but when i finaly took a look at it i was definatley surprised. Its probably one of the best bikes to roll out of wally world. However, Id take it in to get a tune -up asap.

Pros:
You get the best of both worlds....The thrifty selection and entry level performance. The rear suspension really helps cushion the tush. With good upgradable components, Its hard to say this bike is all show and no go.
Cons:
A little heavy. Broke a pedal 3rd time out. Needs tune up right off the bat. Wally world can't slap 'em together like the pro's do.

I flippin love this bike. It has my vote for the best buy on an entry level payscale. Once tuned you'll be peddlin with the Cary fishers and Specialized at a fraction of the cost. Get one already!

I like the bike for what it is,an awsome deal at around $300. It'll take a little time to work out the kinks and get it dialed in but it'll reward you by handling all the abuse you throw at it. The brakes and deraillerus are going to need constant maintanance but it's an easy tradoff for dynamite performance. It's not a bike for a pro but a weekend warrior can't go wrong for the$$$

Great looks, outstanding feature set. Dual disc brakes! Upgradable. Welded, full suspension alumnimum frame. Seems to be well made.
Cons:
ProBrakes. Overall weight. 36 lbs is heavy for alumnimum! The tires are maybe a bit too aggressive and should be replaced with hybrids for street use.

Clearly a step above the usual "entry level" department/sporting goods store bike. With a few adjustments, you can upgrade the stock parts (Brakes, derailers, etc.) on this bike and compete with your entry level Giants, GTs, Treks, etc. Just because they paid $700+ doesn't mean their bikes are THAT much better after you pay a little over $500 (complete with upgrades) for your Mongoose.
Unless you are a very serious rider, you can have fun with this bike in a wide variety of settings.
I recommend taking this bike in to a bike shop right off the bat, before you even take it out. Have them tune it, and it will ride AWESOME!

Pros:
disc brakes (when adjusted properly. face it, the guys at wally world don't know how to), nice, durable frame. good fork.
Cons:
disc brakes took a little while to figure out how to adjust (no documentation). rear shock almost the same as on the much cheaper mongooses in walmart (just a digit up in the model number).

Comments:
i was surprised that i saw this in a department store. i was looking to upgrade my (don't laugh) dxr al, and just to get a disc brake would have been about 200 bucks (new fork, hub, etc.). i am just a casual rider, just looking to excercise, and was just looking for a good bike that can last. this is, from what i saw, the best deal for what this has. what i like best is that it has real upgrade potential, i can buy real parts for it. on the cheap bikes, you may be able to get a couple of upgrades, if any. for 280 dollars, i couldn't find a better deal. i know that promax aren't the best mech disc brakes, but they'll do for now. it's not like i'm going downhill on a mountain. they do a better job as my tektra v brakes. also, it comes with good hubs, 8 speed shimano gears, combo shimano brakes/shifters (always nicer than grip shift), wtb tires (velociraptor 2.1) and saddle (speed v). the ride is smooth (i may have just been comparing to the dxr al), and stable.

Comments:
This bike is as entry level as one can get. It has the cheapest(cost and at times quality) components available on a "Real" MTB from your LBS with department store pricing. Its not a big hit bike but XC rides with 3 to 4 foot drops have been fine. If you want better quality than standard Wally World bikes but aren't able or willing to pay LBS prices, the Blackcomb is in the middle. Perfect bike to illustrate what a step up in components will do. over all a good buy for the causal rider.
