MAZATLAN, Mexico (April 2, 2000) -- For the second consecutive week, 2000 Olympic Long Team members Alison Dunlap (Colorado Springs, Colo. -- Team GT) and Tinker Juarez (Downey, Calif. -- Volvo-Cannondale) were the top Americans in World Cup competition. At the second round of the World Cup, April 2 in Mazatlan, Mexico, Dunlap finished second in the women's race, while Juarez placed 10th in the men's event.

Three-time consecutive national champion (1996-98) and 2000 Olympic Long Team member Ruthie Matthes (Durango, Colo. -- Trek-Volkswagen) rounded out the top-10 for the Americans, finishing eighth in the women's race.

Canadian Alison Sydor, the '99 World Cup Series overall champion, won the women's event and Italian Martino Fruet won the men's race.

Sydor took off quickly and within five minutes of the start, put a sizeable gap on the rest of the field. Dunlap, who placed second at the World Cup opener March 26 in Napa, Calif., and Canadian Chrissy Redden stayed together, taking turn between second and third. In the third lap, Dunlap, the '99 national cross-country champion, dropped Redden and went on to capture second.

Matthes, who finished 12th overall in the '99 World Cup Series, got off to a tough start, but was able to climb her way from 16th to eighth by the end of the race.

Outside of Juarez, the U.S. men fell upon bad luck, with Olympic Long Team members Steve Larsen (Ashland, Ore. -- LL Bean/Mongoose) and Travis Brown (Boulder, Colo. -- Trek-Volkswagen) having to withdraw from the race. Larsen, the '99 Pan American Games gold medalist, flatted in the first lap and then had brake problems before dropping from the race in the third lap. Brown suffered a broken tibia at the start of the race after coming out of a fast turn and hitting a tree. Brown, the '99 national cross-country champion, will return to his home in Boulder, Colo., and visit a doctor there.

East coaster Chris Eatough put in one of his best World Cup finishes and was the second American at 39th.

After two rounds of World Cup competition, Sydor leads the women with 420 points, with Dunlap second (400 pts.) and Matthes seventh. Juarez is the top-ranked American at 16th overall.
