(Sept. 2, 2001) -- U.S. masters scored big at the 2001 Masters World Mountain Bike Championships, Sept. 1-2, in Bromont, Quebec, Canada. American riders claimed 28 medals over the weekend event.

Dawn Bourque was the big winner, snagging gold medals in the women's 35-39 cross-country and women's 35-39 downhill. At the 2000 championships, Bourque won a bronze in the cross-country and hit gold in the downhill.

Other women's gold medalists included Arizona's Lanie Mason, who topped the podium in the women's 30-34 cross-country. Shelly Wilson matched Mason's result in the women's 40-44 women's cross-country.

Mountain bike legend Steve Tilford was victorious in the men's 40-44 cross-country. Tilford dusted the field, placing more than 3 minutes and 45 seconds ahead of second place Natale Bettineschi from Italy. Gold is a familiar color for Tilford, who won the same event last year at the 2000 world championships.

Kathi Krause scored a gold medal of her own the women's 40-44 downhill, adding it to the silver medal she earned at the 2000 race. Patricia Mannion and Kathy Burns took the top spot in the women's 45-49 and women's 50-54 downhill, respectively. The winner's circle is a second home to Burns who took home gold from the 2000 world championships.

In the men's downhill, Joe Picchiottino won the 35-39 division, and well-known masters American Albert Piemme snagged gold in the 60-plus category.

The American cross-country women proved to be a force in the 30-34 category, with U.S. riders sweeping the medal podium. Behind Mason, Sally Warner took silver and Linda Murphy earned the bronze.
