Nat Ross Wins Mountain Mayhem
Staff
Thursday, July 10, 2003

Nat Ross set a new course record in winning the Mountain Mayhem 24 hour race this weekend in the United Kingdom. Nat’s win is a huge victory for the Subaru-Gary Fisher team, and the first major victory on a twenty-nine inch wheel mountain bike in international endurance racing.

The Mountain Mayhem is the biggest, and the oldest, 24 hour race in Europe. Nat led the field of 80 solo riders from the start. Racing exclusively on twenty-nine inch wheel Gary Fisher bikes, Nat raced the majority of the Mountain Mayhem on his Sugar292 full-suspension. The 29er gave Nat the ability to cruise with little effort over the rough course. He was able to conserve the energy he needed to complete 28 laps, with his fastest lap being 41:24.

Gary Fisher was at the race in person to congratulate Nat on his epic victory. Fisher spent two weeks prior to the event touring Europe to promote the 29inch wheel mountain bike. It was very gratifying for Gary to finish his visit with this major win on one of his bikes. Gary raced the solo category of the Mountain Mayhem for the first time; he completed 11 laps on his Two-Niner.
