Do you want warmth, dryness and comfort in a mountain bike shoe at a reasonable price? If so, then the Gaerne Polar shoes are your calling. I’ve had the privilege of using these over that last 2 months in the drippy, chilly Pacific Northwest and have found them to be very adequate on all levels.

As I have some big stompers (size 12), I find the triple velcro strap closure system they use give a nice fit for my wide feet. The ratchet style that Sidi and others use tend to pinch my piggies, but not with these. Around the ankle they use a padded, insulated velcro closure system that includes a non-absorbent synthetic material. It does a great job of keeping the mud, slop and worms out when you’re on the trail.

They also incorporate a synthetic leather upper that’s lightweight, non-absorbent and abrasion resistant and with an eyestay gusset that helps keep the elements at bay. If you are looking for a total waterproof shoe, then you will need to add some Gore-tex or Seal Skinz socks into the picture. As far as I know, there isn’t a pair of biking shoes sold that keep you completely dry but these do a very good job at keeping most of the water out.

Also, for my rather hefty weight (225 lbs), they still hold up well on the stiffness factor. The shoes use an injection molded nylon and urethane outersole- Hence, I don’t notice any flex in the soles when pushing hard on the pedals in the flats or climbing the steep hills on the local trails. The inside of the shoes are lambs wool lined that keep your toes roasty in all but the most frigid conditions. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t recommend using these in anything above 50-55 degrees as your feet will sweat profusely as I have already found out .

Are they worth $189.95? So far, the quality/ reliability of these shoes has been excellent. I’ve had no problems with any of the closures or materials used. The bottom line is this- Not only do they offer you the fit and stiffness you would expect in a same priced summer type of shoe, but include the fact that they keep your feet warm and, for the most part, dry, then these are hard to beat. I would strongly recommend these for anyone who doesn’t want to worry about freezing their feet off on their next epic ride and by keeping their mind at ease, thus, allowing full concentration and focus on your ride at hand.
