Average Rating:

These Nokian Metal Studded tires are designed exclusively for use on ice, snow, and frozen lakes. Ideal for mtb'ing on these surfaces, and they provide excellent traction and control not possible with regular tires...

Pros: don't buy anything else. i have ridden most of the trails around snowking ski resort in jackson hole, wyoming all winter long, of course only on hard pack. i even road to the top of snow king ski resort. got kicked off by ski patrol for having my dogs with me. no slippage on cold dry snow. only lost a couple of studs in three years.
Cons: expensive but well worth it.
Time Used: More than 2 years
Comments: tried to make my own and it's a real pain. the local shops had other brands of studded tires but even they didn't recommend them. they said order a set of nokian. i was glad i did.

Pros: Fantastic tire and great grip on ice. no other studded tire even compares to the 296
Cons: Tires are expensive and hard to find for purchase
Time Used: More than 2 years
Comments: for gnarly winter riding these tires rock, the 296 is the only tire to pick, dont comprise for a lesser tire or your might comprise your ride, this tire will keep you up on the ice even in the crappiest of conditions.

Pros: The Nokian Extreme 296 has extraordinary grip on ice. You have to try them to believe it.
Cons: They are an expensive tire, so you have to be dedicated to winter riding.
Time Used: 6 Months
Comments: These tires perform very well on ice. The only material that is sketchy under these tires is the brown street snow that's been stirred by car traffic. They are heavier than your standard MTB tire. But I would rather turn a bit of extra weight that feel myself bouncing off the icy pavement after my bike slides out from under me.
Rating: 5
Recommendation: Yes I would recommend it to a friend
