Pros: very good price with excellent components for the money. G2 frame
Cons: not sure about the spray job! pedals are crap along with the tyres
Time Used: Less Than A Month
Comments: Not had this bike long (2010 model)and it was my first GF bike. I was a Trek man before and went from an 8000 to hkek. Have to say I am very impressed, the handling is great and the components for the money are also good. Obviously the 8000 is a better spec but then it is £600 more! If your into trails with a bit of down hill I`d say its worth the money, I think I`m going to have this bike for a while.

Pros: Excellent handling. Good price point.
Cons: Drive train will need upgrade. Forks will need upgrade.
Time Used: More than 2 years
Comments: I have the pre-genisis cro-mo. Better IMO. Marzoozhi Z3 forks make a huge differece. Takes a beating without breaking. Excellent in deep woods. Comfortable and will not beat you up like Al., frames can. A keeper.

Pros: Light/stiff frame. Plush fork. Decent spec. Price!
Cons: Crankset Wheelset
Time Used: 3 Months
Comments: This is the '05 ZR-9000 model. RS Pilot SL fork with air assist. LX fr/r derailers, avid levers, m904 v-brakes, maverick rims on nameless disc hubs, Bontrager Select cranks. I have ridden this bike for around 2-3 months and the bottom bracket is giving out. My crankset is wobbly. I'm replacing it with the new Hollowtech II LX crankset. (should have been there to begin with)Lighter/Stiffer/stronger. If your gonna spec so much LX, why not go all the way? Other than the cheap cranks and BB, the bike is very solid/predictable. Not a featherweight hardtail at around 27lbs, but decent enough. I think I'll pretty-much keep it stock for now until stuff breaks. The first thing I would upgrade beyond the crankset is a nice light set of wheels. (though the wheelset that comes stock hasn't even shown a hint of weakness)That with the cranks may drop it down around 25lbs...maybe less.

Pros: To tell if you have a 6061 or ZR9000 frame, look at the downtube. On a ZR9000, it will start oval vertically at the headtube, and morph into oval horizontally at the bottom bracket. The 6061 frames have just basic round downtubes. Hope this helps, I work for a Fisher dealer, and I have seen some true ZR9000 HKEKs labeled as 6061
Cons: i love mine, its a steel 98 model
Time Used: Just Once
Comments: mmmm HKEK taste like pudding

Pros: I think the bike is an outstanding value for the money. I also paid $719 for mine.
Cons: Lack of ZR9000 frame.
Time Used: Less Than A Month
Comments: I questioned the bike store on this and they said it was the ZR9000 frame. I called Gary Fisher and they said it was a ZR9000 frame and some of the frames were mis-labeled at the factory. Yeah right, sure they were. I do not believe my bike was mis-labeled. It says 6061 Platinum Series. I thought I was getting a ZR9000 frame. I am not happy with all the confusion around this. Gary Fisher should come clean with a press release to clarify the matter. Perhaps offer some sort of incentive for good will.

Pros: Super light, upgrading seat, stem, and post.
Cons: None really, unless this frame isn't the one I paid for.
Time Used: Less Than A Month
Comments: Alex, you've got me all paranoid about my frame now. I would never of paid out the cash for the HKEK if I knew it had the same frame as the Tas. I would've just went ahead and bought the Big Sur. Did Gary Fisher say anything about a rebate for those of us expecting the better frame?

Pros: Light (enough), nimble, excellent geometry, beautiful paint job - a very sweet bike. Don't pay retail for it if you can avoid it - got mine for $720 on sale, and you might get it for less.
Cons: Be aware that the 2004 HKEK does NOT have the ZR9000 frame as has been advertised in GF's brochures, web site, etc. Also, the Pilot SL shock is a bit squishy and can bottom out a bit if you are heavy and don't add air (I'm 6'2"@195 lbs). I put 30lbs in mine initially (you can add up to 50lbs - two strokes of a small Shrader pump!), and it's much stiffer now and less likely to bottom out.
Time Used: Less Than A Month
Comments: The folks at Gary Fisher Bikes have confirmed that (at least mow) the 2004 HKEK does NOT come with the ZR9000 frame, but the 6061 T6 aluminum frame. The bike's sticker says "Platinum Series Laser-mitered double-butted 6061 T6 heat-treated aluminum". As far as I know, they don't make a "Platinum Series" 6061 aluminum frame, but as the rep told me, "Specs are subject to change without notice". Maybe they do now - who can tell anymore?

Pros: Nice bike to get started with mountain biking. light weight and fast. durable and nice to look at. takes a beating!
Cons: you might have to upgrade some of the components (rear derailer). none other than that.
Time Used: 1 Year
Comments: i ride this bike to work (14 miles one way) in the spring and fall everyday on the rode. it is superfast. i keep up with road bikes. and then i ride it after work and on the weekends on the trails. this bike is awesome. don't drop anything over 5 feet. you might want a double squishy for that.

Pros: As a first ever MTB purchase it rocked. Did everything I needed at the time. For the money, the compomnents (LX, XT mix) acted as expected. Couldn't get that mix at that price point today.
Cons: None really. WTB seat could have been softer, I guess.
Time Used: More than 2 years
Comments: As I said, for a first MTB this was a great choice. Good value for the money, solid performer. Bontrager rims surprisingly solid for all the criticisms I've heard. Only bummer for those looking today is the component mix is not quite as nice (unless you subscribe to the theory that today's Deore/LX mix is better than yesterday's LX/XT . . . )

Pros: Frame and components have taken a load of abuse with no ill affects. Geometry lends itself to being nimble & well-cornering , good value for the $$$.
Cons: Could benefit from a better drivetrain , some Bontrager components more show than go.
Time Used: 1 Year
Comments: A solid investement in an all around hardtail. Attacks singletrack & decent jumps with poise. Comfortable climber , but downhillers & real hardcore xc's look elsewhere. A stout package overall.
Rating: 3
Recommendation: Yes I would recommend it to a friend
