I'm talking about the 2005 model here. And the only plus I can really think of is the price... $475 out the door.
Cons:
Specialized changed the frame. It's now a heavy, chunky monster, unlike my last (2002) Rockhopper. I'm not one to whine about "geometry", but however they changed the basic frame's shape, it changed its overall ride. It now feels like you're riding a cheap version of the Toyota LandCruiser. It's big, it's strong, but it just ain't the same.

I don't know why Specialized beefed up the frame of the Rockhopper like they did. The 2002 frame used to feel like a racer, a speedy but strong machine on any XC trail. But this 2005 model feels like it's trying to be an all-purpose beast; it's become a jack of all trades, master of none. The gear and brake components that come with it are okay. But the Manitou Axel fork is slow to respond at best. I'm going to return mine. I'm sorry Specialized changed this bike so drastically.

front fork weak( bottoms out way to easy)

for an entry level bike this is an great bike. wouldn't hurt to upgrade a couple parts but at somepoint you do that to evey bike.

Pros:
Price, value (decent components for the money), nice looking

Tires struggle in loose or technical stuff, Manitou Six shock not very responsive

This bike was an upgrade from an entry-level Trek 820 and is a good value (less than $500 out the door). Bike is light, quick, and has decent components. Upgrade the tires if you plan to do any serious riding. Also, the Manitou Six front shock doesn't seem to change despite adjusting the dampening.
