Trail Description:
The Iliff Commons mountain bike trail begins just inside the vehicle barriers. Follow the "wheel spoke" arrows pointing to the service trail to the right, or take the next service trail to the left. That trail ascends Ad Astra ridge through native prairie to a splendid overlook of the State Capitol, then descends gradually to the woods. At junction 2, take a left into the woods, and you're on your own. Just be sure to follow the mountain bike "spoke" markers, which keep you on woodland trails and off the mowed fescue trails reserved for cross country runners, walkers, and Nordic skiers. The woodland trails include very steep ascents and descents, shared with runners and walkers, which are free of obstacles. Turning west at junctions 10 or 11, however, riders may choose a steep, rocky trail with log barriers which is technically challenging. This segment is incorporated into the Last Gasp Mountain Bike Race on the first Saturday in spring, part of the Spring Forward Fitness Festival annually. Another race for beginners, the Break a Leg, is shorter and excludes steep ravines. Overall loop distance is around 3 miles. Open dawn to dusk 365 days per year.
How to get there:
From I-70 take the K-4 East exit which crosses the Kansas River. Follow K-4 East onto US-24, and promptly exit to the right. Turn left at the stop sign (still on K-4 East), pass Rees Fruit Farm, and turn left (west) on NE 31st Street. The entrance to the Iliff Commons is 1/2 mile just over the top of a hill, 50 feet east of Kincaid. Follow the parking signs into the unpaved prairie parking area.
