Trail Description:
Great Falls National Park and the Riverbend County park allow Mt. bikes on designated trails. You may start your ride at the main parking lot for either park or at the Difficult Run dirt parking lot located at Rt. 193 Georgetown Pike and Difficult Run (Approx. .5 mile east south east of the traffic light at the intersection of Old Dominion Drive and Rt. 193. Well its not Moab, but you can get a good workout in the wooded dirt road/single track combo. Great falls is really mostly road or non technical single track. River Bend located north and immediately adjacent to Great Falls has the better single track riding. There is an easy single track with great views along the potomac. Connect these two trail systems and you can get a good 1-1.5 hour workout just 25 min. from DC. (Bring your climbing gear for a ton of top roping in the park just south of the "great falls".

How to get there:
From DC take the George Washington Parkway to I-495 exit Rt. 193 Georgetown Pike (before actually getting on I-495) turn right onto Rt. 193 heading west towards Great Falls. Drive about ten minutes to first traffic light turn right to get to Great Falls Parking lot. This is the middle of the loop. You can head in either direction until the trails end (this is a good way to scope out the other parking areas.

Additional Notes:
Can be combined with Difficult Run Trails for longer (wetter) day.

I'm not just a shopaholic, but I always think that when you introduce yourself to someone, you should lead on what you do best. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm really good at shopping. Excellent, in fact. www.discounthandbagsguide.com

Great Falls and Fountain head are about the best you can finds local to DC. You need to ride great falls a few times to figure it out. It would be a pretty short ride if you do not extend up into Riverbend Park. I suggest parking on Georgetown Pike and going in that way. You get a short climb about a mile in to get you warmed up. Then when you go up past the falls you should take the high road to Riverbend. You can pick up trail maps at the visitors centers.

I have ridden on more challenging sidewalks in the city. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an "advanced" rider or anything, but a lot of "trails" around here are pretty weak. Could be due to lack of mountains for me and my MOUNTAIN bike. Take what you can get though. It's better than a 3+ hour drive to West By God Virginia.

I agree - it is under-rated. I am a beginner and I thought I was gonna die a few times. Lots of logs and some good climbs. Very scenic too.

This trail has been underrated. There's a ton of killer singletrack hidden back in the forest there. It's definently not for beginners. I've seen beginners there and they're hatin' life.
