Ride Summary:
Expect an easy ride on a dirt road closed to motor vehicles
Trail Description:
The road in Waterton Canyon follows a beautiful canyon up to the Strontia Springs Dam. There is plenty of fishing along this stretch of the South Platte River. Growing up in Denver, we used to fish our way up the road and then coast back down.
Go through a gate and begin an easy climb up a dirt road. The mileage is marked at intervals on green signs. The road follows the South Platte River to the Strontia Springs Dam and ends there at a fork in the road. Return as you came.
How to get there:
From 6th Ave. and I-25 in Denver, drive west on 6th Ave. to Wadsworth. Turn south on Wadsworth and drive to its intersection with C-470. Staying on Wadsworth, go under C-470, drive five miles and turn left on the Waterton Canyon/Roxborough State Park Road. Take your second left into a large parking lot. The trail beings across the road from the parking lot.

Today I rode Waterton Canyon Trail on a road bike and survived! My friend told me that the trail was about 10 miles long and paved. Not! The trail is 6 miles out and 6 miles back and made of hard packed dirt and small pebbles. I was really surprised how well the road bike handled the trail surface(even with 1200 miles on the used rubber), nonetheless, I was probably one of a very small handful of road cyclists vs hundreds of hybrid and mountain bikers. The trail slowly gains altitude towards the dam, which becomes only very apparent on the way home. A few sections of the trail are covered in shade by the protruding rocks of the mountains, which can easily create a very cold pocket of air. The quick remedy for the drop in temperature is to pedal faster!
I gave this trail a 5 only because it acts as a great warm up for the Colorado trail and the scenery is breathtaking.

This is a fun trail for a quick or long ride. 6 miles up the road is quick and painless, like they say, it is simply your warm-up to get ready for the switchbacks that carry you to the resting spot on top.(lenny's rest) Looping around to the left is a fun little downhill back to the dam, but the real fun is sticking to the Colorado trail and then climbing out of it. Enough Water is a MUST!!

This is a great spot for people like me who are just getting into this biking thing. I just moved here and I'm still adjusting to the altitude, but there's nothing on this ride that I couldn't handle with ease, plus the scenery is nice. To all of you who grew up around here--I don't know if you realize how lucky you are to be living in such a beautiful state! See you on the trails.

The Waterton Canyon ride is just the warmup. Watch for Bighorn sheep along the canyon walls. Keep riding past the dam and ride up the Colorado Trail. You will get to a log bench where the trail splits. To the left is the Roxborough loop. To the right is the Colorado Trail. The Roxborough loop is a medium size loop that will bring you back to the road again. It is a pretty easy ride with one big drop off that you have to have balls to ride. If you continue on the Colorado Trail you will ride some of the greatest singletrack around. Keep riding and eventually you will get to the Foxton road and the South Platte River. There is everything you could ever want in this ride. There is a downhill to the river that is awesome. Just remember you have to climb back out of it. Total mileage to Foxton road and back is 30 miles including the Waterton Canyon road. Bring a couple of power bars and plenty of water if you do this ride.

The road to get to the single track is a nice warm up. But the single track makes the trip worth it. Gradual climbs and nice down hill and if you choose at the bench up top you can hop onto the Colorado trail or do the loop back down F-U-N! Also go ahead ride stoned I love to pratice trail first aid on fools.....C-YA!

I agree the 6 miles in is a good warm-up and the colo trail is sweet or just do the loop if your short on time, some of the best single track in the front range. like Jah said don't forget the fatties!

I agree with the comments, 6 miles is the warm up, no way it'll take you 4-6 hours unless as Jose says you go to Buff. Creek. Don't forget the fatties.
