Trail Description:
These trails interwind through redwood forests with many technical single track trails to choose from. Some offer very technical single track with fallen trees to bunny hop and small mud pudles to plow through or jump. There is very light traffic on theses trails. There is a killer woopty doo section where you can catch big air if you like. fire trails are endless with singletracks crossing everywhere.
In wet weather, the trails can get slick. Its not muddy, just slick because of the clay, but during the summer, the trails are ripe for fast speeds.
How to get there:
Take 101 north past Eureka and past Humboldt State University to the city of Mckinleyville. Take the main street exit and drive on it for about 5 miles and turn right on Dows Prairie Rd. Look for the signs for the Forest Service Nursery and take the right up the hill. Park your car here and follow the road up and there the trail begins.
Additional Notes:
Keep an eye out for horses

These trails are all on land owned by a logging company so there are no maps (according to a local bike shop) and I think you are supposed to have some sort of permit. Also all the land around the “trailhead” is private so park at your own risk (a guy at the nursery let us park there). To clarify the directions: At you approach the Forrest Service Nursery (and blueberry farm) there will be a dirt road that will “Y” off to the right (actually more of a driveway for the houses). After about .25 mi the road will take a right; the trail is hidden in the bushes just to the left of a gate. Plan on having enough time to explore- you really have to get back into the forest to find anything remotely interesting. Lots of down trees across trail. A guy on a horse said there have been problems with bikers vandalizing the logging equipment so watch out for angry loggers.

There are so many trails here to choose from. I live at the bottom of the hill and I go up there almost everyday. All the climbs are farely easy the McKinleyville side of the mountain is a lot less steep then the Fieldbrook side. My favorite entrance to these trails is out behind the golf course on the North side of the hill. You can take these trails all the way out to blue lake but be prepared for an exhausting ride back.

Loads of stuff back here. Funny, I
used to work at the FSN and I was
under the impression that these
trails weren't very good. I never even
rode them til I saw the post here.
Awesome stuff, got a little lost and
rode around in circles for a couple
hours. Take a map.
