I agree that Fort Ord is a single track paradise, however, I would caution new riders to the area that it is very easy to get lost. There are very few landmarks to get your bearings and many of the trails are not marked. Even if you have a map, it is easy to get disoriented. For your first few rides, try to ride with a local or at least go on a weekend so you can ask other riders how to get back to the parking lot if you get lost.

I've had a 2nd home in carmel valley and thought Ft. Ord was entered from Marina, CA only - heck it's in my back yard! You can enter through Laguna Seca - so many sweet single tracks. Someone should create a Mt Bike Bed and Breakfeast...you could ride many days exploring....the sheep are fun to see..you always smell them first. I only rated this "good" - as it needs some trail maintance. Remember be nice to the horseback riders...we don't want it to end up like Marin County! Take time out to view the "Salad Bowl of America"

Great fun, loads of trails, for beginners to advance, remember if you print of a map of the area that the area is massive , enter by the trails you want to hit for best results, on our first time out there we came in by Parker Flats and thought we could make it to Goat Trail, 41, and theres no way!! Many good trails no matter where you enter the lands...Happy Biking!!

I had to be at a wedding this weekend up in Monterey and decided to squeak in a ride up in Fort Ord. This area is a mountain bikers paradise; everything from savannah oak grasslands to tree-lined single track. I remembered riding in this area for the Sea Otter Classic a few years back and I loved it. Trail conditions were perfect aside from the ever so often soft sandy patches. Poison oak was everywhere. You just had to watch out. I had to turn back on trails 37 and 39 because the poison oak had covered the trail. Not worth it. I worked my way over to the goat trail (41) and raced down some insane single track. Lots of fun. Go early in the morning on a weekday if you can and you'll see not a single soul. Highly recommended!!
