So what the heck is the deal here? Are we cutting the trail or not. I'm ready. Let's do this! I've got 2-3 guys who are ready to help.

With all due respect, your named after a plant. You love nature and to you, understandably, want to go overboard to protect it. Building trails straight down a hill is great--the ruts and roots and erosion are great for mountain bikes. I don't like riding pansy trails-the more rugged the better. Why does everyone freak out so much about erosion anyway(?)--the Grand Canyon was created by erosion. Creek beds and washout areas are fun for hikers too. I went back there the other day and didn't see any further trail work done. But I like the idea of night cutting of some trees to limit exposure. My chainsaw is oiled.

Continued from my previous post... Go ride Saw Wee Kee in Oswego, Knock Knolls in Naperville, or go poach the trails up at Fabian which are more fun, and in a much more degraded habitat. No, bikes do not cause more damage then hiking (as long as you avoid skidding) however, the additional volume of trail uses (when you have bicycles out there too)will have a greater impact. and most people who ride these little trails have no clue how to ride and do a lot of skidding and thus do actually cause more damage then hikers.

Have you guys started expanding the trail yet? I want to help putting in some nice downhill sections running towards the river. Let's start major work as soon as snow starts to melt... maybe sometime in late Feb/early March.

Let's start work on it sometime mid-July. I recommend clearing the trees at night so we can get them out before sun up.

Patroled? By the bike path police? What they need to do is put in some double jumps and expand the trail system back there. They could even add some berms down by the river to help keep speed up.

This trail is right next to a patroled bike trail. If you are caught on this dirt trail, you will get a fine. Seen it happen!

Mountain bikes don't ruin preserves any more than walkers do. Get over it.

The trails at Red Oak Nature Center are not open for bicycles. They are hiking trails. Try driving down the road to Fabyan Forest Preserve on Rt. 25 in Geneva.

Do NOT bike on this trail. It is in a PRESERVE area! Bikes are only allowed on the paved trail. Violators may be subject to a fine.
