Trail Description:
Built by STORM - South Texas Off Road Mountainbikers. It is awesome, excellent views, with tech sections. SouthTexas private ranch ran by a die hard mountainbiker. $5.00 enrty fee on voluntary pay system, with waiver, logg in, and maps of Two(2) main loops.
Has 3 Downhill course, that are excellent. Yearly races held here (TMBRA & NORBA event) in Early April each year drawing upwards of 1000 racers. Primitive camping w/cold showers. This is the best trail in South Texas. It is located just 30 minutes north of San Antonio, TX.
THIS IS A MUST RIDE > You will come back feeling you want to ride it again.
How to get there:
North of San Antonio, take IH-10 to comfort exit, take a right at light, and travel under the highway. Take the first left (road). You will see a yellow street sigh with a mountainbike on it. Travel to the very end of this road. It will get very narrow (one lane) and lead you to a gate. Open the gate and stay to your left. You will see the Logg in board, with one restroom near by.

Rode the lower loop a few days ago with a couple friends. First time for us at Flat Rock. The trail is really well marked and technically easy except for a few rocky step ups. The climbs are long but relatively gentle. Canopy is only about 5% so sunscreen and lots of water required. I took a trail map for general orientation and it helped reassure me as we passed named sections of the trail. Best biking I have done in central Texas. $6 is a bargain.

The directions given on the map are horrible. I live 2.5 hours away from Comfort and spent an extra 45 minutes trying to find the ranch. I then arrived at the location and found out the track was closed until jan 1, 2009. I just would like everyone to know to not go there until that time.

The Lower Loop puts things into perspective early on by butting you side-by-side with sheer drop-offs as the trail winds around them. Stay focused or you might end up in a 5-foot wash-out as one in our group did. Sprained ankles aren't fun for a mtb’r. Pipeline Hill, with its 1900ft elevation, makes for a great spot to take a break and a few scenic photos overlooking the ranch. Evilworm is a twisted little section of downhill that will get the first-time rider nervous by its name alone. Shortly after Evilworm is a wicked downhill section that you can gain some nice speed on. Just be careful as the trail is somewhat of a rut and a right pedal too low will catch the side – trust me, I know. Although I must say, that was my sweetest 10 ft Superman impression to date and the reason I will continue to always wear a helmet.

This place is a must ride for anyone within driving distance! Although I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders will love it! Packed with switchbacks, nice climbs and sweet descents to match, Flat Rock Ranch is a singletrack lover’s playground…just watch out for the cacti and prickly bushes.

My wife and I are both moderately experienced bikers in good shape. We did Flat Rock Ranch (or more accurately, it did us) looking for a workout. We did get a workout but the course was considerably more technical than we prefer - that's to say we had to walk/hike/carry the more treacherous spots, which were plentiful. Also, riding hybrid tires was a huge mistake. Bottom line, not for the meek and more of an extreme sports experience than a trail ride.

The website is www.flatrockranch.NET
Check it before you head out. They close for hunting season. I wouldn't call it Advanced Technical. You need to be in shape though or it will hand you your a$$. Flat Rock Ranch is not flat. It is climb city. A couple of ledges (maybe 2 ft at best?) at the end of the lower loop tend to put hardcore XC'ers in the hospital with punctured lungs. (true story) They seem to spook at the thought of losing contact with the ground. ;P Riders that stray toward the adventurous part of the sport will find that Jimmy's ranch will wear them down and send them home basking in post-ride afterglow. Camping available, shower stalls to rinse away the grime. Plenty of rocks.

Great trails and location, maps for trails are not great so just go for it. I just rode the other red trail on june 20 and it was a great trail , nice overlooks and fun to ride. Never did find the downhill trail.
Directions from kerrville, take comfort exit, turn rt , go down about 1 mile , take a left , go about 1.5 miles until you see flatrock road , take left and follow it about 5 curvy miles until you dead end at the ranch.

Looked for the trail this weekend, directions hard to follow, and never saw a sign with a bike on it. How about tossing in some distances. Also the flatrockranch.com website is down.

By no means the hardest trail in the area, but an excellent ride nonetheless. Some great climbing and fun downhill sections, but not terribly technical. For more technical, see Emma Long and Bandera.
