Trail Description:
Gales Creek campground and trailhead is across the road from Browns/Rogers camp. This is a new network of trails built by the state in the last 2 years. Go on undulating single track due west for 1 mile to the bridge at fork of Gales. If you go left, you climb steeply up to Storey burn road, about 3 miles and 1500 ft. from there you can continue on trail to a bridge under hwy 6 and back onto motorcycle trails. if you go right, you go up north fork of gales. The summit of that is 6 miles up from car. Lovely winding singletrack through old burn glades. Next year, the FS will build the trail on north to cockburn. And, you can even loop the two trails together, but that's a gonzo/abusive one--take several maps and GPS!

How to get there:
Portland to hwy26 West to hwy 6, and almost to the coast range summit at Brown's Camp. Gales Creek campground is on the right (n) about .8 miles before summit. Go 1/2 mile down dirt road to campground trailhead parking

Excellent ride. Bit tiring on an FR bike but doable and a LOT of fun on the way down. Have yet to see another rider/hiker/equestrian on the trail, though I've only run in twice on weekends in February & March.

I enjoy this ride There is a small falls near the top of the trail heading left after the bridge. If you go right after the bridge be warned - it is harder and longer than you think - still fun though. This is one of my favorite trails - very well maintained.

Pretty good trail, and not too far from Portland. The climbs were pretty grueling and I ended up walking like 3 times. Whoever posted this trail on this website says its an out and back but you can make a loop very easily. Check out the map at the trailhead and create your own route. I think I'll combine this trail with the University Falls/Browns camp trail next time I do this. There are a few trails that start from the gales creek campground. They all seem pretty fun but they all have a lot of uphill.

These trails on the North side of Highway 6 can be pretty wet at times. If you want to ride this area with us or want to find out about other excellent rides in this area, we can be reached at www.mountainbikewith.us
