Trail Description:
Northport seems to be a pretty well kept secret. The riding here is a lot of fun and has a bit of a North Shore atmosphere with lots of man made stunts. The ride is pretty fast at times and real slow at times.

There are trails on both sides of the river. If you fall you might go for a swim as the trail is directly above the river.

How to get there:
Take Hwy 75 south from Tampa past Venice and watch for the Nortport Exit. Take the exit and turn left (East). When the road makes you choose between left or right turn left, go past the bridge and take your first right. When you see the State Park sign on the right (really small sign) park there and check out the map at the trailhead.

Take the second North Port exit. and always look for the trails that go up the levy's, they are not marked and they almost always loop back to the double track. These trail off shoots are where the technical fun parts are

There now is a local club named MAMBA, Myakkahatchee Area Mountain Bike Association. It's free to join, all you have to do is sign up to the web site forum at northportmtb.org. It's that simple! I am a member and currently we are working on having the city designate these trails for mtb and hiking use. Please check out the forum for more info. These trails are awesome single track trails that run through all different types of Florida wilderness. The trail has been around about 15 years and the locals are ready to save it, so please sign up and check the post for more info.

A couple things to add....there are atv's that use this trail. There is a single track trail most of the way along this trail with a double track that runs parallel with it that the atv's use.

This is a good trail. Several man made jumps/tricks. Some of the man made ramps look to be questionable at best. I walked over some of them...don't know if I would ride them. Several bridges. There are lots or roots, some areas are un-rideable because of sugar sand, but these areas are small. This is not a motorcycle/atv trail. There are no motors allowed. This time of year the water in the creek is low and fordable. I plan on checking out the other side of the creek soon. This best way to get to this trail is exit I-75 at sumpter head west for less than a mile. Look for lady slipper road on your right. Ladyslipper becomes backensto which becomes mandrake terrace which becomes vernell. There is a small park on the east side of vernell. You can park there and ride out.

These trails you all speak of...Are you talking bicycles or dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. My buddies and I have some dirt bikes and are looking for places to ride around Sarasota. Somebody let me know! Thanks.

Excellent mix of riding terrain, I prefer the single trail but has a ATV trail next to it for the wife and kids. Great place to take family or noob rider. Plenty of obsticles for advanced riders. Bring mosquito repellent in the summer months and plenty of drinking water. Beware of Banana spiders spinning webs across trails!!!

check info at northporttrails.org this totally volunteer supported trail is one of the best in fla. you can cruise or it can kick your butt. can't get lost, just keep creek on one side going out & other side returning. twisty & narly for a little and then open and fast for a little, nice mix. you can get what you want there. be sure to pre-walk the stunts to check on condition & rideability or just be in awe of the skills it takes to clean one of the simplest ones. a clean trail is a happy trail.
