Trail Description:
This is a mult-faceted trail system, which is also designated mult-use. From the trailhead, the initial out and back trail takes you around the north end of the lake for .65 miles. From there you can hook up with the first loop which is .66 miles. Listed as "rugged", you'll need to exert yourself on this "lakeshore" loop to make it up a short, but steep hill. From there, you can then choose to access 3 other loops. If you choose the "cabinsite trail" loop which continues alongside the lake (this is an old gravel road), you can ride for a 1/2 mile to yet another trail ("The Spillway, or green trail") that goes straight up for several hundred feet to the top of the "knob", or hill, that overlooks the lake and surrounding remote area. You'll have to stop riding and start climbing the hill with your bike, but once you get to the top, the views are beautiful. To sum up, this is no mountain-bike park trail system, but a combination of some flat to alot of rugged single track, as well as some wide and rolling gravelled dual track. Don't expect a smooth non-stop ride, but do expect beautiful scenery and challenging riding.
How to get there:
I-65 to exit 50a, go west on Highway 50 about 12 miles to Brownstown. From there, turn south on Highway 135. Go 2 1/2 miles to 250 South, turn left and travel another 2 miles to the entrance to Starve Hollow Lake SRA. Go all the way back into the campsite "B" area, as far as you can go along the lakefront to the trailhead. The gatehouse has primo maps available for the trail system.
