Trail Description:
Lots of incredible trails to choose from in this area--downhill/shuttles; short loops; or all day trips that never cover the same trail twice. Flat Mountain is a round dome, and there is a gravel road that circles it halfway up. Lots of trails above and below this road, and elevation gain ranges from moderate to long and arduous. The trails are maintained by motocross club, and are closed to infernal combustion engines during fire season. You absolutely must have a map and local bike shop advice before venturing here.
How to get there:
From Corvallis, west on Hwy 34 towards Waldport. After turning south on 34 past Philomath, go ~5.5 miles, then left on Bodkin Road (first left after Decker Road--both Decker & Bodkin intersect Hwy 34 from east); go ~.6 miles, and park at Y. If you're on Hwy 34 and you're driving uphill through curves, you've gone too far. Again, you must check with locals for maps and specific trail advice before traveling here.

Lots of great trails, work crew days rock, its a education twice a year that doubles for a stress test in you cardiologists office....been riding there for 16 years now, do the work, then ride the trails, what a great system, to maintain and give something back.....

these trails are made by the atv and dirtbike riders so they get prority and engines rock!!!

The local contact should be Paul Mortenson at Starker Forests in Philomath (541.929.2477) and Buzz @ Fred's Honda in Corvallis (541.757.1034). Permits are available for bicycles from Starker just by requesting one. For motos/quads, you need to connect with Buzz and the Flat Mountain Riders Association and do a trail work party. Motos are only allowed on the trails in the Fall and Spring. Bikes are allowed year-round unless extreme fire danger closes the area. Trails are slimey and snotty in the wet, so it's best to visit from June through Sept/Oct. Maps are hard to come by, but a GPS with a good topo will go a long way to keeping you from needing a call to the local SAR group. It is very easy to get lost.

First off it's not Bodkin it's Botkin named after the families that settled the area. The permits are Work party permits-paid for by volunteering not fee permits. Why? Because the private land owners want to know who is tresspassing...yes that is right ...tresspassing. They found that $ alone did not prevent abuse-but a litte sweat did. Another thing you should know is that many of these owners cite their soil not timber as their most valuable resource. Thus-cars, bikes and motorcylces all contribute to the demise of the road systems getting up their and silt in our rivers. The motorcycle club donates 1-2 days a year to building silt bars and protecting the rights of folks to ride up there. However-there are just as many bicyclers up there as well who do not put in a volunteer day of work to help keep this open. I challenge all bike folks to consider donating one day of work, get their permit and help keep this open for everyone to use. It is checker-boarded with pub

trails do it for the love. I understand that places
get trashed without respect, but this IS NOT the

Not only is maintained by a local club but in order to ride the trails you need to put in a days work with the club. You are then issued a permit. The area is WELL travelled by the county law enforcement who cite people without permits. Many of the trails are on private forest land.
