Trail Description:
This trail is relatively short, but there are areas that even the most advanced MB's may have to dismount. It begins at an innocent looking grass entrance between the park entrance and the parking area. The entrance goes over a culvert and back about 1 mile of easy grassland terrain. As you near the lake there's a choice to take the more challenging lakeside route or the more mundane route. Eventually you will cross a large gully and briefly come out near the roadside. Then briefly crossing a prairie along the powerline right of way, you will enter a very fast and exciting several mile loop that has plenty of lake vistas and wildlife with fairly easy rolling hills. Once back here it's fun to do the loop several times before taking the more challenging path back.

How to get there:
The location is fairly secluded, but if you take exit 105 South off I-70 (Hwy 2300E) down through Montrose, Dietrich, and Winterrowd to hwy 100N, turn left take to the end (2400E-Effingham county/000E-Jasper County) and turn Right, south very briefly to 500N turn left and follow to the entrance of Newton Lake Fish & Wildlife Area.

rated it a 1 because I couldn't ride it. September 2, 2011. the trail is marked "closed until further notice". a call to the DNR revealed that a lot of the trail got washed out and a couple wooden bridges need replaced. The guy said that the DNR doesn't have the money to fix the trails.....and they might not ever reopen.

Trail is fun and extremely easy. 4.5 miles on my gps and took only 40 minutes. Lots of fallen limbs and trees on the trail.

This trail would be a five if it weren't for the grass areas. The singletrack through the woods is excellent. A nice mix of fast and technical.
