Trail Description:
The Sam Houston National Forest has dirt bike, equestrian, and mountain bike system consists of approximately 80 miles of marked trails. The trails are available for motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles less than 45 inches wide, bicycles, and horseback riding.

How to get there:
For the East trails, take I-45 (about 13 miles north of Conroe and about 10 miles south of Huntsville); exit FM-1375 and go west about 3.4 miles. Turn right on FR-233 Rd (I don't know if the road is marked). There is a sign indicating trails though). Go about 1 mile and curve to the left when the road splits. On the left is a big juvinile facility. Continue for about 1.5 miles. Parking is on the left. They want $5.00 per head to ride. Trails are marked.

For the West trail system, go about 9.7 miles west of I-45 and turn right on FR 215. Go north. Parking is about 3/4 mile on the left side. Trail Map at http://www.southernregion.fs.fed.us/texas/recreation/sam_houston/samhouston_rec_opps.shtml#shmutrail

There is about 10 miles of official mountain bike trail, nothing too difficult but there are some long gradual climbs. Double lake has about 18 miles of trail since the new section was added. If you go off onto the 80 some miles of multi-use trails at Huntsville and are worried about breaking a chain, I suggest you carry a chain tool.

Actually have a qustion. What happens if you bike breaks down so many miles into this trail. Like you throw a chain and have no replacement. Hike twenty miles back to you truck? What do you do? Please e-mail me at swsb16@msn.com Thanks Jason

This is a mulit-use tail shared by horses & a lot of motor bikes. It's very sandy and easy to loose traction, but with over 85 miles of trail there are a lot of options. Trail closes when it's wet, so call ahead. Sam Houston National Forest number: 936-344-6205, 888-361-6908. They charge a $5/person fee for day use.

The best MTB trial near Houston. The dedicated MTB trial is at the Double Lakes Recreation Area. It's an 8 mile loop. I love it. Up and down with a nice mix of technical features. Pleasant and good exercise.
