Trail Description:
The trail is almost 100% fire roads that run alongside the Delaware Raritan canal from New Brunswick to Trenton. You have to cross a few retaining walls on the New Brunswick end that make for a jarring ride. I suggest walking your bike across the first retaining wall unless you want to take a nasty spill (you'll know what I mean once you get there).
The trail is totally flat looks pretty much the same from start to finish. But you may be interested in the surrounding history your first time out on the trail. Some of the original canal locks are still in place and there are a few places one the trail that seem strait out of a Steven King novel. Watch out for the evil clowns.
How to get there:
Take route 18 north.
Once you cross the river, take the River Road exit ramp.
At the end of the ramp, make a left onto River Road (West).
You'll see Johnson Park on the left were you can find parking if needed.
Take River Road to Landing Lane and make a left.
Landing land will take you back across the river. You’ll see the trail head and first retaining wall on your right.

Definitely a beginners ride, but a nice cardio workout nonetheless. Lots of waterfowl along the way for those interested in birds. A ride from New Brunswick to Trenton would be nice in the spring or fall.

some sections south of alexander road are sandy and get slow when wet or in winter. the path ends in trenton, but you can ride through the streets for about 3 miles and pick up the path again to continue on to the feeder canal side towards washington crossing. we do a 70 mile out and back on sisnglespeeds in mid winter on the western feeder canal side. see map at http://www.dandrcanal.com/park_map03.html
