Trail Description:
Ups and downs, switchbacks, rocks, roots, everything the technical rider would want. Watch out for hikers as they are out too. Respect!
The trail can be very fast at times and very slow at others, but fun the whole way through.
How to get there:
Take 4th street down towards Browns/Belle Isle. Go right on Tredegar St. Park under the tracks and go across the river via the catwalk. Go south over the catwalk and out the southside entrance. Hang an immediate right for about 100 yards. Go up the stairs and across the tracks. Look right.
Additional Notes:
The best Richmond has to offer. Right next to the James.
This trail can be an incredible ride whe

Great trail, very challenging, tons of rock gardens, excellent river scene as well.
We dropped in (left) at 22nd street and stayed above for a while. Then, we eventually took the major staircase down. Once down, it was less difficult except for a major root obstacle. Then, we needed to climb the stairs back up. I read this in another blog, but was too curious to miss out on the dam crossing.
If we end up going again, I'd remain on the top section of the trail.
Fantastic work out and lots of neat challenges.

sweet trail rode it this past Thursday.
the direction above are a little strange
cause it is accessible from the other
side of the river at riverside dr then
wont have to carry your bike up 5
flights on belles island if you started
there. trail had nice ramps and varied
in skill with some flat areas, rocks,
roots, and some steep descents and rock-
faces. next time i would suggest to
riders to start by the the nickle bridge
and ride to belles island and can then
hop in the river on a 108 degree day.
Great ride would suggest it to anyone
with moderate experience.

Most technical trail I have ridden in
Virginia.Tight turns short steep hills
plenty of large rocks and roots ,not
many long straight runs.I started from
Pump House from the other side of James
River .Need more signs, trail mis hard to
follow across the river and find
Buttermilk trail.It all made for a 13
mile ride.,great trail.Trail compares to
Anglers Ridge's Witchback trail in
Danville.

These are the best trails in VA. extremely difficult.
many up and down hills, rocks, roots, big drops and
a whole lot of fun. if u complete buttermilk and
northbank, you are looking at a ten mile loop.
leaving you were you started, at belle isle. i am a 16
year old, intermediate rider, and these are bar
none, the best trails i have riden through out va.
100 times better than poor farm park about 15
miles up the road. i deff. recomend these trails to
riders, but ride at your limit, and be very difficult
sometimes. at times, very high speeds.

Very technical. Switchbacks up and down a long hillside. River crossings, some ramps and jumps, boardwalks, a narrow dam crossing and some good rock and log obstacles. The only downside is that there can be considerable washout after a good rain and they do close trail because of it. On those days there are the much more mellow James River trails across the street.
