As a former Ranger in Rock Creek Park, I can tell you that bikes are not permitted on any un-paved trail or road. The park police and rangers do get out into the woods, and the penalties depend on the cop and your attitude. The joggers are snooty because they know you're breaking the law. Sorry for being a kill-joy. For better use of the park, check out Rock Creek Park and the Capitol Crescent trails on the road bike sites.

No real off-roading in Rock creek-signs on all the singletrack say no cyclists! This is a good place for calm recreational riding only

This is a great trail, i did it about a week ago but unfortunately more than half of the trail is illegal to bikers. I decided to go on the runners trails and although it was very fun and i didn't get caught, i did not get to do much biking

The legal paved trail runs along Rock Creek. There are several short sections shared with cars on the weekends. During the week large portions are shared. Today, I rode from the intersection of Beach Drive & Old Spring Road to the Jefferson Memorial and back with stops for photos and snacks nice and slow in 5 hours. Parts of the trail are freshly paved, parts are bumpy with root heave. The "snooty runners" were home. Everyone was nice, stepped to the side, and gave way on bridges. I did too. All in all, a relaxing and pleasant ride. Cold too.

Just another comment on the legal aspect of off-road riding...people do it and get away with it, but if the park rangers catch you they will confiscate your bike.

horrible trail, shouldnt even be on this site. a waste of time. tons of stuck up joggers, very little singletrack and nothing evevn close to resembling Wissahickon in Philadelphia. If you want some seriously fun singletrack in the DC area, go to Fort Davis park and ride their Dupont hiking/biking trail. Tons of fun!!! Rock Creek Park stinks!!!
