There is a great place to park on Peterscreek Parkway at the Hamricks shopping center. The trail starts there and goes to First street in winston. from there you will ride on city streets for a short distance then back on the trail. You will go under a railroad bridge and HWY 52 then to the Salem Lake dam. It adds a few miles to the fun. Don't get lost following this.

Holy Crap!!! This trail is amazing. You have to go past lineville road on the lake trail to get there. the singletrack will be on the right. not for beginners. i only explored one way, then my chain broke. but, what i got to was a plank 15 feet in the air dropping into a huge quarterpipe. there is a wall ride section as well as other huge jumps. i only explored part of this trail so there are tons of possibabilties. i will post some pics from my phone as soon as i can.

oh, by the way about the guy in the woods, i saw some guy real far back walking by himself in a brown jacket. he was a white guy and did not look to suspicious, however, i would not trust him. i dont know if he is the bad guy, but i would avoid contact with him. he did not bother me but still. . . Also, the trail is used by people (nice people) who like to let their dogs run free, so watch out!!!

The main trail around the lake is great for beginners and moms and dads that want to take the kids for a ride. But the truly hardcore go in the woods. You wouldn't beleive some of the crazy #%*@ that's back in those woods. I mean some of that stuff is insane. It goes on and on, you could be back there all day and never hit the same trail twice. I wish I could show pictures of whats in those wood it would blow you mind. It's virtual dirt jump heaven, great for hard core free ride and down hillers. It might take you while to figure it out but once you do it's AWSOME!!!

Yeah so I'm the guy who started this stuff with huffy rider, and obviously others have caught on to what a cowardly little weasel he is. i have never seen someone so territorial and pathetic that they have to try to act as if they are the pride and joy of their workplace. huffy, please get a life. we can and WILL keep riding salem lake. how do you live with yourself?

Other option: park in Old Salem and ride to the park via the Greenway. The Greenway is mostly paved and goes to the Salem Lake damn where one can hit the Salem Lake trail. Not much challenge for hard core MTBs but very scenic. Caution--there are some strange individuals in the area and I would not recommend solo for everyone. I ride solo regularly and have only seen a park official once on the trail. Cell phones are a must and help will only come from other MTBs or very slowly from officials due to lack of access.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents. First of all,
you have to take business 40, not I-40 to get to
Linville rd. once you get there, there isn't much
parking. the trail around the lake is flat as a
pancake and definately not singletrack. there are
some singletrack side trails, but the park signs are
explicit: bikes should only be on the main trail. The
side trails are for hiking only. I parked my bike
and hiked a few of them just to check them out.
they are not well maintained at all and many are
overgrown with poision ivy. So if you want a
smooth ride on a dirt road, salem lake is for you. if
you want to actually ride your mountain bike, you'd
be better of going somewhere else.

I would only like to say that just knowing that there is a "monitoring tattle tale" on the trails, makes my entire family feel very uneasy. Anyone that slinks around in the woods playing "voyeur" and performing peeping tom antics is demonstrating deep seated psycological problems and needs to be kept in check. The officials who are designated to work legally in the park should be aware of this individual and monitor him. Since he boasted that they know him, they should advise him to stop his perverted peeping tom activities. All riders should be aware of him, and learn who he is, because he is a possible danger to all of us and our children. If it takes someone who has been in prison to keep him in check then we are all for it. Thank you Goose Killer for watching out for us all.
