This trail is fantastic in the winter months X Country Skiing. Up grade a minters head lamp, stick the batter in your backpack, take in a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers with a few friends and rest in the meadow just before you head down into the village on your skinny skiis.

The end of Gov't trail has now been diverted in 2003, at the east side of the Tiehack Ski area boundary. Where the trail used to cross the paved road and lead to the steep switchbacks, it now follows a dirt/gravel road beneath the new Maroon creek bridge at the Tiehack base area. This road re-joins the original trail along the maroon creek. Or ride between the High school and new Rec center to (or from) the Tiehack side of Buttermilk. The new bridge crosses directly to (or from) Gov't trail from town, and thru the highschool/rec center property, and to/ from a paved crossing above Maroon creek!

(8/02/2003> Gov't Trail is RELOCATED after Tiehack ski area at concrete road crossing. Looks like the legendary steep lower switchbacks above Maroon Creek may be gone forever?(!!), Except in our memories. Still we have SuperHighway fast rolling sections downhill. 2,000+ vertical climbing (past Cliff House Summit) from Aspen easily in less than 2 hours on Ski area vehicle service roads or Government trail, depending on route and strength! Rock garden and forest Between B-milk West and Snowmass Two Creeks are the best in the valley. Huge views from W. Buttermilk Mtn, and thru B-milk ski area, and down to the maroon creek.

YOU CAN RIDE GOVERNMENT TRAIL FROM ASPEN! You do not need a shuttle, or do not need to begin the trailhead in Snowmass Village. Inter/Expert level riding on Tiehack service road, or up West Buttermilk service road. Join the trail to ride up, or ride the service road almost all the way to the top. You will see the trail. Full details for Gov't trail at mtbr.com under my name. Why did they name it Government? It RULES!
