Trail Description:
Pocahontas State Park, located in Chesterfield County (near Richmond) provides an excellent to suit bikers of all palettes. "Weekend-Outting" types can enjoy the expansive network of Forest Roads which are networked throughout the park. However, the real treat is the Mountain Bike Trail System. There are three separate trails (which total 10 miles in length). The beginner trail provides two miles of moderately difficult single track riding. The intermediate trail, a four mile single track run, provides a nice heart&lung experience. And the most beautiful of them all, the advanced loop, provides advanced riders with an amusement park of technical challenges. This four mile roller coaster run of single track has areas which make a person stop and think "can a bicycle actually do THAT?" Quite an exciting trail.
How to get there:
Take I-95 south from Richmond, turn off on the "Chester" exit. Travle on Iron Bridge Road and take a left on Beach Road (look for signs to the park). The park will be on your right approximately 5 miles down Beach Road.

New trail added to the double red-couple of skinny log rides a roller coaster type section ,tetter, and an odd looking board ride?Lakeveiw II is alot like the other trail Lakeveiw but has some jumps,skinnies on it.

My first visit was all that I had hoped for. Excellent
tight trails woven through the trees with hairy
switchbacks. Drops into a half pipe in the red
diamond section in back as well as some very
sweetly placed jumps and logovers made this a well
rounded trail system that will satisfy all tastes and
leave you planning your next visit. We logged over
22.5 miles and didn't cover all of the trails that are
north of Beach road. Now they have a map that
shows another large trail section on the south side
of Beach rd. In summary...pack a lunch...and
dinner!

New trail around lake is a good workout. Not very technical but has some sections marked expert although still pretty easy. Nice views of the lake throughout. Will definately be back!

Singletrack trail mileage actually numbers about 17 miles now plus more to come in the next 2 years as construction of new trail continues.
Mapping and maintenance of the trails is handled by volunteers with the Friends of Pocahontas SP.

I ride the beginner (green) trail and the intermediate (blue) trail regularly for a good work out. Being 63 years old I find the advanced trail a little too technical as I no longer enjoy going over the handle bars.

I use the trails fairly often! The park now has a mountain biking trail brochure with a map. Unfortunately, you cannot park near the entrance and avoid parking fees any longer. They have signs there that declare that to park there you must have paid for park admittance. There are many places you can enter the park at the entrance to fire roads but some of these also have the same sign. If you will use the park fairly regularly, it is well worth purchasing a yearly pass. This allows you to park at the places which give you easiest access to the mountain biking trails, and save you money after a few visits. If you are not in the mood for technical but want a good work out, the Old Mill Bicycle Trail is a five mile loop which is double track and has good drops and climbs! The trails are in good shape. As far as the endurance needed, that depends on the rider. It wasn't that hard, but a bigger would find it challenging. The park is huge and I wish they would use more trails for mt bikes. The Beaver Lake trail is good but closed to MTB's. Both the expert an novice trails are only about 2 miles long, so getting a good workout will take doing the trails a couple of times. the fireroads are longer but...the're fireroads!

This is a great work out! They've just recently redone the expert trail off of the intermediate trail. It now has additional log crossings thanks to hurricane Issabele! Also added a section that runs like a rollar coaster quick ups and downs through a creek bed! If you haven't been here in awhile deffinately worth checking out the new additions. Thumbs up to the crew who worked on it!

Have to love these trails. Excellent single track for all skill levels. Each loop can be pushed pretty hard for a great cardio workout and there are plenty of obstacles and tight sections to keep up the technical skills. The Double Red Blazed trail has some "North Shore" type stuff that has been added. If thats your thing, check it out.

The park does, in fact, have fairly good maps of the trail, but on the scale they use (the park is over 7000 acres) they're much more useful for the double track fire roads. The 3 single track trails are so convoluted and in such a relatively small area that they just note their general location. They can be accessed from the Old Mill Road Trail close to the Heritage Amphitheater. However, the trails are very well marked, and they do not intersect; so it's almost impossible to get lost. The maps are available at the entrance gate. By the way, you can park next to the highway near the entrance and ride into the park if you want to avoid the $4 day use fee.
