Trail Description:
Site of the 1999 Pan-American Mountain Biking Event. You can start at the chalet or in the valley. At the chalet there is a south loop called thoracic park which is a good warmup loop with a fun rolling downhill and moderate intensity climbs back to the chalet. Once back at the chalet cross over the road and take the long fast bumpy hill down into the valley. From here you can climb the lung busting camelback, a two tiered climb out of the valley. You have the option of taking some very technical singletrack with ledges in the middle of steep sections and off camber swithbacks before you reach the camelback.
At the top of the camelback is some twisty singletrack which descends to another very steep technical switchback section that empties onto the road after yet another threelog dropoff. The trail winds around up to a moderately steep medium length climb followed by a rollercoaster downhill. Cross the water ditch and into the cow trail which ends in a narrow v-groove steep climb. Out into pasture for a light rolling jaunt into a winding long uphill singletrack climb. A downhill racing section leads into a long grueling climb to the top of the switchbacks which are very technical and difficult to ride (I've yet to do it-3for3 crashes vs attempts) but crucial to getting a good head of speed to continue over the culvert into a short steep climb. The course then curves in a long gentle downhill back to the valley. Alison Sydor told us it was a great course but difficult not only because of the technical aspect but also because there is very little chance to rest. If you think you're up to it you can check out more info on the Manitoba Cycling Association website at www.cycling.mb.ca
How to get there:
From Winnipeg head to the south perimeter highway and to the southwest corner of the city. Take Highway #2 and follow till you reach the Roseisle turnoff. Go past it and on your left you will see a large blue sign for the Birchwood Ski Area, turn left at the sign and follow the gravel road to the foothills and turn right where the road will go past sheep grazing land and up the hill to the ski area.
Trave time from the south edge of Winnipeg is approx. 1.5 hours.
Additional Notes:
It's a good idea to check with the Manitoba Cycling Association before you head out to check on

Just a heads up, that it is highway 3, and not highway 2 that leads to these trails.

The Birch-Rosiele riding area has now been closed to bikers and skiers. The land is privately-owned and the owners have decided to ban activities. Please see the Manitoba Cycling Association (www.mca.mb.ca) website for futher details. Thanks
