Trail Description:
The Tsali Trails are some of the most popular trails in all of Western North Carolina and even the entire east coast. Four long loop trails wind along the hilly shores of Fontana Lake. Mostly hardpacked singletrack with a few rocky, muddy, and technical spots, and connecting gravel/dirt roads. Spectacular views, great downhills, moderate climbs of 300 feet or so, banked turns...
How to get there:
From Asheville, take I-40 west to Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (US 74). Follow past Bryson City to NC 28 west, turn right. Follow about 3 miles to Tsali Recreation Area on right (at top of hill), turn right onto gravel road; the trails start at the end of this road.
Additional Notes:
Trails alternate use between bikers and horseback riders. Trail use costs $2 a day.

Went there for 3 days and loved everyday of it. Talked with a few locals on what they thought to be the best routes of travel rather than following the recommended routes. What I would recommend is bike of the fire lane same route for right and left loop, then follow along the lake back to camp. This would mean ride left loop counterclockwise and right loop clockwise. Mouse was great, did that loop clockwise went out to the overlook and that loops back around to a previous spot onto mouse you had biked already but continued it clockwise that was a great route. Thompson as previously stated, recommended is counterclockwise. But that way its 6.5 miles of steady climb to a 1.5 intense fast downhill. If I were to ride it again I would probably do the 1.5 of tough climb(Clockwise) to a very long smooth downhill. But don't get me wrong that downhill is worth the climb, just depends on how much of a work out you want.

Thompson's downhill is TRULY worth the climb.

Me and my group of friends just completed 3 days of Tsali and loved it. Mouse Branch was our favorite, followed by Left Loop tying in Right Loop hitting the over look loops in. We did Thompson the "recommended" way which is counterclock wise and it is a really long steady climb. the downhill is great, but not sure it is worth the work to get there. We kept huffing and puffing to each other on the climb that clockwise may be better for Thompson.
These are the best trails we've ever riden. Every trail is different and has something for everyone.

Great trails. killer downhills that make the trip worth it. Tip for the left loop: ride it counter-clockwise. You may run in to a few people, but you pick up a lot of good downhills.

Tsali is some of the best maintained trails and all-around riding available on the east cost. If you want huge, never ending, climbs and wicked-techincal decents; go to Canada (nickc187).
If you want a place to bring newer riders for a 15 mile fun ride AND a place to put in 75 miles of pure fitness torture...Tsali is it. DONT miss a chance to ride here.

I dont know why everyone comes to NC to ride these trails. I am a local and have been riding for years i rode Tsali one time and have never been back. Its a nice sunday ride but if your into downhill riding or like to pedal to the top for a payoff downhill run go somewhere else this is not for you.My little girl could ride this.

We drove 1000 miles for one day of riding. We were on the mouse loop, then the thompson. The down hill on thompson was worth the whole trip.
