Ride Summary:
Nice mellow ride out in the hills surrounding Boulder. Good for introducing beginners to biking or for those out to enjoy a nice rolling Saturday spin.
Trail Description:
From the Switzerland Trail parking lot, take the right-hand road, following the signs to Sunset. The first part of the ride is a rocky four mile descent most bikers should be able to handle easily. When you reach the town of Sunset, another former mining camp, turn right on CR 118, at its junction with FS109. The green sign for CR 118 is about 100 yards down the road. Coast downhill for almost 6 miles, past Wall Street to Salina, where you intersect the paved Four Mile Canyon Road. Turn left, following the signs to Gold Hill and begin a four-mile climb. The first two miles are the toughest. Stay straight at an intersection with lots of mail boxes lining the right side of the road and continue to Gold Hill. Take your second left at the stop sign, and ride into town. Ride past the general store and turn left at a small wooden sign pointing to Ward. Climb briefly, before descending to an intersection with the Switzerland Trail. Turn left on the Switzerland Trail (a dirt road) and follow it as it descends rapidly to Sunset. At the first switchback along the descent, there is a picnic table with great views out to eastern plains. Go straight through Sunset on FS109 and climb back to the start on Sugar Loaf.
How to get there:
From Canyon and Broadway in Boulder, drive 5.4 miles west on Canyon (Hwy. 119) toward Nederland. Shortly after passing through a tunnel, turn right on Sugarloaf Road (5.4 miles from Boulder) and go five miles to Sugar Mountain Road. Turn right and continue 0.9 miles to the trailhead parking.
