Trail Description:
mostly single track with some intersecting gravel roads. This trail is nice because it is used mostly by bikers, hikers and horse backers. there is no motorized vehicles allowed. Lightly used it is one of SW Washington's best kept secrets.
How to get there:
Take the Fourth Plain exit from I-5 and head east. Follow Fourth Plain Road to Ward Road. head north on Ward Road until you see a Clark Rifles sign. This is a right turn up a hill. Follow the pavement until you get to gravel. Once on the gravel, follow this road until you reach a major 4 way intersection. Take a left. follow this road past the Larch Mountain Honor Camp and take the first right past the honor camp. stay on this road taking rights all the way up to Grouse Vista. Park in the small area at this place and you will see the trail head.
Additional Notes:
Tarbell trail was named after a hermit that lived in this area before the Yacolt burn

Hello everyone,
I wanted to let you know that I just received word that there will be an aerial herbicidal treatment happening this coming Friday May 14 on the Iron Chef timber sale, which impacts the Tarbell trail. The location of this treatment is approximately 2.5 to approximately 3.25 miles SE from the Tarbell Trailhead towards Hidden Falls. The spray will be for units 3 and 4 of Iron Chef. The trail will be posted on all entrance points to these units, including access from Silver Star, as well as at Rock Creek, Cold Creek, Grouse Vista, and the trailhead. Because of the nature of the herbicides, there is a 48 hour Restricted Entry Interval. Please heed these restrictions for your own safety.
Please send this information out to your groups, friends, and associates who use the trail as soon as possible.

I used to ride this trail before all the logging when you could camp up there. It was some of the best single track I have ever been on. The hidden falls are amazing and just what you need after riding all that way. Be sure to make lots of noise coming around corners on the first set of down hill. There are alot of local horse riders. Fenders are also good to have(Horse Poo)!

Tough ride in November. Bottom section was not ridable due to mud from rain and heavy horse traffic. The logging sections were a bit rough and you really had to look for the trail in some of the road crossings. Rock Creek was almost impassible due ot recent rains. We ran out of daylight and finished in the dark. Would definitely do it again, in dry weather and with a few more hours of daylight.

Hello all!
I work for the Dept. of Natural Resources and i have work crews out this week and next week clearing the trail and rebuilding the stretch that was taken out by the logging. As of 6/18 it has been cleared up to about MP 5. Hopefully it will be opened fully here in the next few weeks. If anyone has any questions, drop me an email. kyle.buckmiller@dnr.wa.gov

Has anyone been on this trail this year? I went in
the fall and had a hell of a time finding the trail
after the logging. Im hoping its been cleared but
will make the drive to Louis River if I have to. Any
insight would be helpful. This ride is a 4-5 rating if
its open due to its proximity to Portland.

The trail is wiped out by logging from mile 5.5 to 7.5 (mileage starts at Tarbel picnic area) The section of trail heading north from Sturgon rock to Hidden falls is completely gone due to a brand new clear cutting opperation
