Trail Description:
Four trails of approximately 7-8 miles each on Lake McMurtry near Stillwater, OK and Oklahoma State University. Trails built and maintained by the Red Dirt Pedalers, a local bike club, and the Oklahoma State University Mountain Bike Club.
There are two trails on each side of the lake, each with a slightly different character. The SE trail serves as the race course for the annual Lake McMurtry Madness mountain bike race, sponsored by the Red Dirt Pedalers.
How to get there:
East Side: Take Boomer Road (HW 177) North of town past go cart tracks and golf course. Go left (West) on McMurtry road for 8 miles or so, until you can only go left or right. Go left. The SE trailhead is at the S end of the park at a picnic shelter. The NE trailhead is slightly north of the boatramp almost around the bend.
West Side: Take 6th street (HW 51) West out of town approximately 5 miles to Redlands road. Chickasaw Communications has a building on the NW corner of Redlands and HW 51, back from the road. Turn right (North) on Redlands road and follow it for 3 miles until you can only go left or right. Go left. Follow the road for about a half mile and take a right when you see the sign for the entrance to Lake McMurtry. Follow the winding road to a three way intersection and take a right. Follow this road for a few hundred feet to a four way stop. The NW trailhead is on the SW corner of the four way stop. The SW trailhead is on the SE corner of the four way stop.
Additional Notes:
Helmet and functional brakes required. $5 day use fee per car.

Rode SE trail only so far. I really like
it. It is relatively fast but has some
good technicals. It's well up kept. The
only problem I have is minor; there are
a few baby trees in the trail that were
trimmed down not far enough, making a
few 3 inch spike/stumps in the trail.

The day usage is now $6, which kinda makes it tough if you only have two 5s. Have fun and watch out for deer and turkey cuz i have run up on both on these trials. enjoy!!

I really like these trails, all are pretty easy with fast parts as well as technical areas. Fairly easy rides. If you want someone to ride with email me at Steven.Cadenhead@okstate.edu

This was my second time riding trails. The first being in Ocala, Florida. I have always rode BMX and going to Florida got me into trails/mountain bikes. I rode my 20" and it was a blast. I need to get a real bike! The northeast loop is 6.2 miles and very fun. I wasn't prepared for the technical climbs and rocky decents but the trail is in really good shape...lots of fast areas and fun "switchbacks", cool rock formations to see and nice vegetation. I have lived in Stillwater for most of my life and have just now discovered this goldmine. I recommend this to any adrenaline seeker, you'll have a great time!

I ride McMurty at least once a week. The east side tends to be my favorite. Nice switchbacks through the trees and some minor up and down hills on the first loop. second loop is a bit more technical, but still easy. The third loop on the east side is a little more technical but still easy. There is one 10-12ft drop that is pretty good. All three loops are 6.5 miles or so. If you go north of the main parking lot, past the stop sign you can find the northeast loop. A little more overgrown, but in good condition. Harder climbs and probably the most challenging in the area. Probably my favorite. I think it's around 4 miles (that's a guess). The west side is kind of far away, although good. It's not as heavily used, but there are some nice things out there. All in all there is a lot of single track, a lot of switchbacks, some decent climbs and almost a little bit of downhill at Lake McMurtry. It is the best trail I have found in Oklahoma.

Ride the west side. A bit overgrown but great places to stop and swim and some great smooth downhills with some wicked technical uphills

Rode the East side of the lake today, on the trailhead North of Burris road. This is probably the worst of the four loops at McMurtry. It starts out with some nice singletrack along the bank of the Lake. After the second bridge though, you run into a mile of overgrowth which is pretty bad. We pushed our way through, but in places its hard to even tell where the trail is due to the vegetation, all recent growth I might add. This is a nice trail, so I hope the OSU crew can get to it eventually. A good ride, but we elected to take the dirt roads back to Burris road, and then to the car rather than venture back into the jungle. Snakes, and lots of bugs...be careful.

Another Socal rider stuck in Oklahoma-Nam, this trail is probably the best single-track I've ridden outside of CA. It isn't used much in the summer due to the temps here, but we rode it early this morning (1st week in August) and had no problem getting in a full ride before it got too hot. About 70% of it is under thick jungle-like canopy. Pristine scenes of Lake Mcmurtry are frequent as the single-track makes its way down to the shore for a one mile stretch. This trail is not very technical, but rather long and continuous with some short hills. Take bug spray! The trail is in great shape.

Long, tough because it's long, pretty straight, not tight and twisty like some trails, it was way muddy when I went a day after a rain, some steep (impossible when muddy) climbs and steep decents, wore me out, very very fun though, highly recommend it for general riding fun
