Trail Description:
Veteran's Acres Park has a bunch of stuff and is not strictly for biking. If you go into the prarie you can find rolling hills, but go into the woods and find some fun singletrack. There is a major bike trail that goes through the park so nonmountain bikers can enjoy. The only problem is there is not that much distance but you can make tons of loops. The ditance above is an estimate.
How to get there:
The park is on the near the corner of rt. 14 and Walkup Road in Crystal Lake. I recommend parking at the Nature center. To get there take 14 east past Walkup and there will be a sign telling you when to turn left off 14.

The post about the veteran Acres was
really good. I am so glad that I found
this web site. I am a real estate broker
and would like to know more about this
place. Could anyone tell me more about
this? I am waiting for a reply.

The paths in Veteran Acres and Stearn's
Woods are narrow, wooded, and windy.
There are designated bike paths but many
bikers choose the off limits walking
paths. I have been hit by bikers flying
around corners every year. As soon as
someone is seriously injured, the whole
area will be off-limits to all bikes,
ruining it for everyone. Have some
consideration and stay in designated
areas. I have also heard tha bikes might
be banned altogether because of the
damage and erosion that inconsiderate
bikers are causing in the park.

I've never actually ridden here but i would like to say that bikers are not the only ones who can ruin a trail some hikers do decide to try and make a point by standing in the middle of a trail and get hit just to prove a point. Although bikers do need to stay on their on paths hikers should not try to hog all the good downhills to them selves, and every single mountain biker has at one point or another gotten off of their bike to HIKE up a hill thus making all of us mini hikers in that we have all hiked before.

Why would you get a ticket riding in sterns woods?

Sterns used to shoot at us when we'd run in his woods back in the late 70's early 80s. It's still believed that if you run or bike through there right at sunrise or sunset - you can hear him unzipping his pants and getting ready to take on his next victim

Indeed it is just north of 176 and Walkup. Paved trails along bike path do wind and dip- so be careful especially during slick times. Take care on trails, I have known several who have received tix from CLPD. Have fun & be careful!

Vets wasn't worth the trip except one of the hills it was a challenging hill to master. take the ride to sterns and risk the ticket ride every trail that you can i had a lot of fun there. it however doesn't match kettle moraine but it has a few parts that are just as challenging. if you don't live too far make the trip

Vetrans Acres is not worth the visit, the cross country teams lay mulch all over. However, Sterne's woods is worth a ride; take note that Sterne's woods is not legit for bikers (i.e. you risk a ticket)

There are actually two separate trail areas that are linked. The section with the gravel roads is called Stearns Woods - there are several good single track cutoffs from this main road loop.
