Ride Summary:
A ride made for winter riding and even when conditions indicate you should stay inside.
Trail Description:
The trail conditions make this an excellent winter ride. The trail holds up extremely well even in the worst of conditions. This ride consists of a lot of difficult climbing and very little rest. It's a challenging, but fun ride.
This ride starts out with a relatively easy 2.5 mile ride that enters the park and heads towards Juniper Campground along the Mitchell Canyon trail. Around the 2.5 mile mark, however, things change. This is the start of a long and nasty climb. At the Deer Flat intersection, keep right and keep climbing. At Juniper Campground turn left onto the paved road and start climbing again! At a sharp left hairpin turn, you will see a spur trail at the bend. Take it and follow it to its end. Turn left onto Prospectors Gap. And then turn right after 1.3 miles onto Meridian ridge Trail. Then left on Donner Canyon and left again onto Bruce Lee back to your car.
How to get there:
Take HWY 24 to Walnut Creek and take the Ygnacio Valley Road exit and go East on Ygnacio Valley Rd. Follow the signs to Concord Pavilion. At Pine Hollow, turn right and then right again onto Mitchell Canyon just past the school and follow Mitchell Canyon to the end of the road.

This trail is a great winter ride. The tough climbs keep you in shape, the single track on the North peak trail keeps you technically in tune for spring riding and the veiws are awsome.I've even riden in the snow in January.I ride this trail twice a week in the rainy season.(16 ml.)

Nice hard climb I've heard of being accomplished at 51 minutes..though I've done it in 2 hours...and change. Decent takes about 20 minutes hitting the low 40's mph. Those switchbacks after the first 2.5m have thick gravel so stay wide if you plan to ride it up.
Very green, beautiful trail until late spring when it's brown and hot as hell.

3% singletrak is right, barely a taste. the fire road was just graded 5/00. A decent climb and view, but not a ride to drive for. i'd do it if i lived there, which i wouldnt.

Climb to top is much easier than description indicates if you are moderately fit--possibly due to recent grading. North side single track at beginning of down ride is the only single track on the ride. Since this is 1/4 mile of 12, it is more like 2% of the ride. One of the riders in my group of 3 forgot his bike shoes and did the whole thing in flip-flops. Worth doing, but go easy on the superlatives.

One of the tougher climbs in the area. If you can make it to the top, without a stop, you're the bomb.

Putting this under San Francisco is kinda confusing. It's at least an hour away from SF and that's if there's no commuter traffic. The ride should be called "MT DIABLO LOOP". I didn't see Mt Diablo mentioned anywhere. Tons of steep fireroads, with a taste of singletrack off the peak. Bring your strongest pair of legs along! On hot days there's water available at the various parking lots and picnic areas.

This loop is not 80% single track, more like 3%.Long steep climbs and great views make up for the lack of the narrow and twisty stuff.
