Trail Description:
Skookum Flats is a highly technical and difficult trail carved through beautiful old-growth forest on the slopes of Mount Rainier. It is considered by many to be among the best in the country. Despite its name, this trail is anything but flat. This 7 mile (one way) trail can be ridden out and back or can be used in conjunction with the Suntop trail. You can also turn right at the end of the trail and head back out to hwy 410, turn right and go back up about 5 miles to road 7160.

How to get there:
From Enumclaw, drive East on Highway 410. After about 30 miles, keep your eyes out for road #7160 on the right. (if you see the Visitor's Information Center, you have gone too far. But since you're there, you might want to pick up a map of the trail). After turning onto road #7160, cross the bridge and immediately turn left into the small parking area. The trail head is across the road.

This trail has to be a staple for any NW Mountain Biker. Its in excellent shape currently, with not a single downed tree and no real mud to speak of other than one section near the river that is drying out... though this doesn't mean you won't be gettin' off your bike! The technical challenges are alive and well, making this one of my favorite trails of all time. While I like the White River trail loop, the more challenging route is out and back starting on the lower end... amazing that you're riding the same trail on the way back yet its a completely different experience.

Did it this morning. Park on road 73, ride up to Buck Creek, go left over road bridge, cross 410,go left, hit White River Rambler, ride down to Palisides trail start, go dowm 410 to the Dalles campground, follow trail back to road 73. Total distance 11.4 miles. Very nice.

I stumbled on this trail last year (07) while out off roading, and came back the next day with my bike. It kicked my butt and Ilove it! I am a regular and try to get there at least once a month!

Always a great trail. Alone, it's challenging, leaving you feeling satisfied with a good workout. Use it as a finish for Suntop, and you'll sleep real good that night. Yesterday, the trail was nice and wet. The slippery rocks and roots add an excellent technical challenge. The variety of terrain on this trail is awesome. The trail is smooth, rocky and/or rooty with short technical climbs and short technical descents. "The Rock", located near the falls is a great test for your technical skills. Impossible to ride up without using Trials Skills and extremely technical to ride down. You'd better be pretty damn good if you descend the East end, otherwise, you'll end up doing a face plant on some pretty knarley rocks and risk falling into the White River. If you decide to try it, remember: Don't hesitate..... commit. Anyway... great trail.

What a way to end a run down Sun Top, go back to your car via Skookum Flats versus the road (Hwy 410). Techincal, you bet! Do it and have a great time you may not set any speed records, but boy is it fun to crawl over roots, rocks and, sand pits, after ripping down the butter smooth single track of Sun Top.

(as of 5/19/2007) There's about 100 yards of washed out trail (now beach) and some downed trees along the way, but still one of the best trails around. Hit up the White River trail on the other side of 410 to make a loop.
