Ride Summary:
A quick ferry ride from seattle and you're on some fun fast singletrack. A great quick getaway.

Trail Description:
These trails are amazing. This ride truly captures the spirit of the Northwest. The majestic ferry ride to a sleepy island community just minutes from downtown Seattle adds greatly to the adventure. Once on Vashon you will swear you are hours from civilization. The island is a very rural close knit community. Stop by Vashon Island Bicycles and you will see what I mean. These guys are very friendly and helpful. They're great! The network of trails is amazing too. They start right in the center of town and quickly head into the forest. There are all types of trails from jeep roads to well groomed singletrack. Some of the trails do get so narrow some bushwhacking may be required. These trails are also very quiet. They are shared with horses, hikers and motorcycles, but I have only ever run into one other person on the trail. There isn't a lot of climbing here. The only sustained climb on this ride is from the ferry terminal on Vashon to the town of Vashon which is about 800 feet over 4 miles.

How to get there:
From downtown Seattle go South on I-5 to the West Seattle Bridge. Go East on the West Seattle Bridge and follow it to a stop light. The road now becomes Fauntleroy. Go straight. Stay out of the right lane because it will force you to turn where you don't want to. Follow Fauntleroy for 4-5 miles to Lincoln Park. Park anywhere around here. You will have to take the ferry over to Vashon Island. I strongly suggest you park your car here and just take your bike across. From the ferry terminal on Vashon it is a 5.3 mile ride to the town of Vashon and another .2 miles to the trail head.

The (former DNR)Center Forest trails have improved much over the past 5 years, many are well maintained and make for a good ride - king county website has some outdated maps, and i think there are current maps posted at the trailheads. These are not technical trails, but are fun and apprpriate for single speed or fixed gear. great place to bring beginner riders. bus service from the ferry for less ambitious riders if you schedule it right. stopped capitalizing because got an error message every time i hit shift - told me caps lock was on.

Most of the Dockton trails have their tread torn up by horse traffic. If you hunt around you can find some technical trails with lots of exposed roots but very little singletrack with good flow. There are LOTS of trail users so keep an eye out and don't spook the horses.

I live on vashon Island. Really I do. Go to Maury. Head in the direction of Dockton. When you get to Dockton PArk turn around. Head up the hill, a little ways up there will be a turn on the right up a slightly steeper hill. Go up there for about 100 yards. Look around for a trail opening, there's 2-3. Pick whatever one. I recomend the one closest to the main road. Take that trail for as long as you want. There are tones of splits every where. Explore. WARNING: the trails that go to the right change elavation VERY fast. Only advanced-intermindate riders should attempt. I have helped build a lot of jumps that are often steeper than they look but all have good landings. This is actully where the K2 company tests their bikes. You'll see the factory when you go though town. Have fun.

Okay, let's make this simple. There are 3 trail networks on Vashon Island. The first network starts behind the k2 factory, into DNR land, it has a lot of mud, and some gravel roads. The trails are slowgoing and rutted. The second network is full of groomed horse trails, they can get fast, but watch out for trees. This one starts at the cemetery and goes south over the ridge to Black Angus. The third network starts in the old gravel pits on Maury, and spans many miles. lots of hunters, deer. In this network, you can go from flat singletrack, to gravel roads with views off bluffs at 300ft. There are also some tricky northshore style areas. the bridges are old. jump off rocks, ride bridges and teeter totters

The rains have brought the mud! These trails are great if you like to get dirty. The erosion here won't matter because the land is a working forrest. The trails are still really clear. The windstorm of 10-12-01 brought down some small trees, most are rideable. Be sure and check out 3 Dogs Trail!

Mid September 2001The horsey people just cleared a lot of the trails there for their annual Poker Run. Thank them if you see them! These trails are as good as South Seatac! Kevin C. Has a bad attitude, Glad he moved to Colorado! We ride these trails all the time. You can get about 10 or 15 miles in before you are whooped and need to save energy for the 5 mile ride to the ferry. It always seems we have to jam to catch the 11 AM boat because we open the shop at Noon. More pics and a better trail map are on our web page.www.RideYourBike.com

Rode this last weekend with a guy from the island. The whole island is bike trails. If you are not on a road or in someone's driveway there's single track connecting everthing with a few road crossings : ). Best to have guide, we hit tons of log ramps, tight windy downhills, and some technical sections that were brutal but fun. There's a wolf rehab center adjacent to a part of the trail but was closed off. Didn't ride much of the mapped area. Find a guide or spend a few rides exploring the island.

These trails are crap. Only someone stuck in Seattle would think they're worth the ferry ride. I rode them last year before I bolted to Colorado and couldn't believe how pathetic they were. It reminds me of the trails behind my house in Georgia when I was a kid. They're fine for and 8-year-old on a Huffy, but that's about it.
