Ride Summary:
Got something to prove? Lower Big Quilcene will tell you if you got the skills you think you have. Stay off when wet.
Trail Description:
This is a great ride. It is an excellent trail for intermediate riders while more advanced riders will have a ball too. It is a great high speed romp for the more skilled riders. The trail is mostly hard-pack singletrack and parts will take you through scenic old-growth forest. The trail is best when dry because parts of it can get a little muddy.
How to get there:
From Quilcene go 1 mile South on Hwy 101. Turn right onto Penny Creek Road. Then after 1 mile turn left at the Y on FS#27. Follow the gravel road which will turn to pavement for about 4 miles. At the intersection, veer right then .25 miles later turn left onto a narrow access road to the trailhead.

Unbeatable scenery. Old growth forest most of the way next to the river.
Try parking one car at the ranger station in the town of Quilcene and then drive another car to the top. This let's you ride down the twisty paved road that goes to the bottom, then ride the highway downhill to Quilcene. BY far one of the best rides in Washington state. There aren't really any other trails going through old growth that allow bikes.

The directions to this trail are very good. Once you're driving up FR-27, you will see a sign labeled "Lower Big Quilcene Trail" telling you to turn left down FR-27080. The trail head is at the end of this road. The trail is nice compacted dirt with unridable rocky places in areas. The trail crosses over the mighty Quilcene River several times and over additional small creeks that you might have to swim through. After passing Camp Jolley on your left the trail continues uphill for nearly a mile before passing over a plank over a moderately sized creek. The trail ends at FR-2750. If you want to ride the road back to the trailhead, turn right here and ride the gravel road 4.5 miles to FR-27. Turn right on FR-27 and ride down to FR-27080.

Great challenging single track hills to climb and then a great down hill ride. The best part is that you are exposed to the excitement of the cliff's edge because most of the ride has a river running twenty to thirty feet beside and below you. Nice views of the river at the bridge crossings bridge. This offers a memorable and beautiful ride and a great ice cream store in town too.

I agree with JN this is definately worth the trip. There is some big time blowdown halfway down and some of the streams are not passable but it doesn't matter. This place is mostly hard and fast. You could shuttle this or ride the logging roads about ten miles worth for a good loop. One of the bike shops out of PT offers shuttle service in the summer or at least they used to.

Ride the snow in April! Icy cold start from the top quickly warms the body as you descend the mountain. Streams are running high creating a small but scenic challenge to cross. About a 1 hour ride from the top. Well worth the trip!!!

A mild 11 mile grind to the trailhead will get you nice and warmed up. The fastest single track ever ridden, very scenic, could even take your girl friend/wife on this on without sleeping in the dog house, takes about 2.5 hours total ride at moderate pace, 2 at fast pace, never seen another rider(s).

This is a two car trail, riding up ain't nearly as fun as blasting down, leave one at the trail head and another at the campsite at the end of the trail. Otherwise you can climb the FS road but it's not worthy unless you are cardio prepared. This is a hardtailers paradise, very smooth and fast.
