Ride Summary:
Smooth ST, jelly leggs, exhausting, you'll get it all here!
Trail Description:
Smooth single track, a thigh burning climb, mountain meadows and a trip around the ultra clear Mad Lake make this ride a must for any serious mountain biker. The ORV trails are well maintained. The climb is a tough one but the descent over the hard packed dirt makes this a fast ride. Several birms exist and shoot you out the other side of the turn. One very technical section where the trail has been carved out through a massive rock slide.
How to get there:
Hwy 2 from Steven's Pass or Leavenworth to Coles Corner. Go North on State route 207 towards Lake Wenatchee. At 4.4 miles road crosses Wenatchee River and splits. Stay right for 1.3 miles. Turn left on forest road 62, for 9.7 miles than go right on gravel road 6210. Drive up dirt/rocky access road past Chikamin Creek Trail for 8.2 miles. Park at trail head. 4,800 feet.

July 4th Weekend - went up to ride this but found the trail closed to bikes. So I decided to run it instead. Lot's of snow and kept losing the trail. It added alot of time to keep searching for the trail over and over again. The trail in sections has lots of running water and riding it would create big ruts. The high country was very buggy and there were a significant # of trees down. I cleared what I could but best for another few weeks of summer before this trail is in condition.

There is much to explore here; don't miss Two Little Lakes, Whistling Pig meadow, and, if your legs and lungs are up to it, Klone Peak, which has a 360 degree view...get the greentrails map.

The directions given here for Mad lake are totally lame. Unless you really enjoy a gigantic climb, do Mad Lake from Maverick Saddle. I saw a number of very, very unhappy girl-friends pushing their bikes up the Chikamin Tie trail last weekend. Chances are they will never ride again, particularly that one that started screaming. Mad Lake from Maverick Saddle has only 900 feet of elevation gain. Riding down Chikamin Tie is a lot funner than riding up.

My favorite way to do Mad Lake is as an out and back from Maverick Saddle. This way you starting at 5200 feet and only gaining another 1000 to the lake. Maverick is drivable in most cars. Don't take you Mercedes up there though. It's eight miles each way through beautiful Alpine meadows. You follow the Mad River most of the way. This can be made into a loop or a point to point ride by continuing on from the lake across the ridge and linking up with the Chickamin Tye Trail. This is an awesome area, but stay on the trail so we get to continue to use it.

Except for one 100 yard section, technically easy. You can totally avoid roads to and make a great single track loop. See the Green Trails Map. Fun but tiring.

This is a spectacular place to ride and if you start at Tommy Creek and continue past Mad Lake to the top of the Mad River Trail you are treated to a 20 mile singletrack descent. Pack a lunch though because it will take 6 hours to do it-- more if you get lost like we did the first time. Also you need two cars so you can shuttle to the start of Tommy Creek unless you want to ride up the road 20 plus miles when your done.

Put the mountain into mountain bike. This is THE best trail in the Lake Wenatchee complex. Observe trail closures during the wet season. Bring the ten essentials and extra clothing in late season, this area is IN the mountains and can get very cold and nasty rapidly. For a superpsyco ride, start from the Chickamin ridge lower trail head and ride up the road to the Chickamin Tie (Mad Lake access) trailhead, do the Mad Lake and then do the 10+ mile descent back to the lower parking lot. Legs=ouch.
