The directions on this page are wrong.. uh, you don't go to Santa Cruz and get off at the Soquel Drive exit. You go to Aptos and get off at State Park Drive exit (go left), THEN it's right at Soquel Drive. The park entrance is in Aptos Village.

Depending on what you are looking for, this trail is excellent. If you are looking for technical riding or single tracks, this is not the trail for you. There are other trails in Nisene that will serve that purpose. If you are looking for a hard uphill grind with a fast downhill on the backside, this is your ride. Most of the 1400 ft elevation gain happens within three sections past the epicenter turn that span 1.5 miles but the trail maintains a steady uphill nature throughout the roughly 9 miles from the parking lot to the Sand Point overlook. The wide nature of the fire road allows one to safely hit speed on the way down but there is not much technical ability involved. This ride serves as a road workout on a mountain bike.

This ride is rated as a beginner ride. In terms of technical mountain biking ability, it is definitely a beginner but be prepared to climb. Past the epicenter is a series of three steeper climbs witht he middle portion being the longest and hardest. the overlook is worth the work and the downhill is fun. For a great all-day trip continue past Sand Point to Demonstration Forest and get in some excellent single track.

Sand Point overlook is not a beginners ride. However, Other destinations such as the Loma Prieta Epicenter, and the Loma Prieta Logging site are. In addition, there are 2 single track trails in Nisene Marks as well that are available to Mountain Bikers. Aptos Rancho Trail and Vienna woods Trail. They can be combined from either end of the park to make a long trail ride with plenty of challenges for any level of bikers. Also Soquel Demonstartion Forest can be acessed from Sand Point just by riding further.

This park is excellent! It has a great climb, and wonderful singletrack. I take the fire road up every weekend, it is great. Also, Bicycling Magazine voted it one of the top "Five doubletracks that won't make you miss singletrack" in the nation.

If you want to turn this into an "Epic Ride" (gungho riders only, please), continue up Aptos Creek fireroad from Sand Pt, climbing a moderate four miles to the entrance of little known 'Soquel Demonstration Forest'. This park has several miles of killer legal singletrack for those who like their trails steep with lots of dropoffs, gnarly roots and slippery rocks.
