Trail Description:
3500 acres with many old roads and trails, two lakes, lookout mountain, historic ruins.

Pack a lunch, cold drinks, etc. It will be too far to get back to the convenience store in town. Then you can take the time to check out the old foundations and trails. There's supposed to be 8 Secrets to Valles Mines. Several mining villages, 74 former houses and 250 years of history are only a start. Mining ended long ago but the roads and trails all go somewhere. But where... The Rock Road went back to the General Store, 5 1/2 miles total. Take French Village Road to the Lakes to add a couple of miles. You cannot imagine so much solitude this close to the city. Getting dropped off at the Radio Tower to start cuts it down to about 2 1/2 miles if you gotta get back to town."

How to get there:
12 miles south of Crystal City/Festus on Hwy.67 to V-Road

Additional Notes:
Permit required

Valles Mines is closed for hunting season (nov-jan)-then it will re-open to mountainbikers. I have never been there or heard anything about it so please ignore my trail rating-the form said that the rating was 'required.' They rent out the land to hunting clubs who apparantly need it to remain undisturbed by rowdy dirtbags :) They asked that I call back in late december to see when it will be open and to get info about passes/permits. Contact Info for Valles Mines: Steve Frasier (Superintendent) 573-631-6875 There's your answer....4 years later :P
