I hope people will get the sarcasm of the first review. This is not a place for beginners. I spent many years figuring this one out. As stated below the "middle ridge loop" is the "easiest" trail in the park, but this park is HUGE. A friend and I once bike camped here for three days at backcountry sites and rode over 100 miles inside the park. From Mustang Peak on the far east side of the park one can look into the central valley. Be prepared when venturing into this park.

This is a good intermediate trail. The single track part is all down hill and requires some skill because of the speed. The rest of the trail is all up hill on dirt roads.I blasted my legs getting up these smooth semi roads. You need a pair of legs to climb these hills.Watch out for hikers on the single track.I almost took one out. I'm not a mountain biker, but a former employee at Coe State Park, so my rating on this trail is based on the consensus of what I've heard from hundreds of mountain bikers. This trail is, as someone else has commented, most certainly NOT for beginners. The route described has over 2200 feet of elevation gain in less than ten miles, and the several miles of singletrack are very technical. (Coe Park has very little in the way of trails or roads for beginners.) The description you have listed uses outdated names: The names of "Routes" have been dumped and replaced by a more logical system. Here's a translation of the loop into current usage, with suggested alternatives:Start from HQ at Manzanita Point Road, follow until you reach the junction of Hobbs Road. Follow Hobbs over the 400 foot hill past the Monument, then down the other side to the creek crossing. (Alternately, you could skip the Hobbs Road by taking the single-track Flat Frog Trail, w

Coe is heaven on Earth for real hearty riders. This is the 2nd largest state park in California. My friends and I routinely do 34 mile 7000' rides here without ever repeating a single track. We climb dirt roads mostly, not because there is no single track, but because the single tracks are better as downhills and often extremely steep. The roads are often steep as well, and make excellent downhills. The faster you go, the narrower it seems. Everyone needs to ride, however, in control and be prepared to share the trails with equestrians and odd hikers. Horses seldom are seen beyond 6 miles from trailheads. One day this place will be famous.

This trail is NOT for beginners - there's a lot of loose sand, swichbacks, and tricky side-hills. There are harder rides at the Coe, but not many easier ones. You can eliminate most of the fire road from this ride description. Instead of riding up to the monument, take the flat frog trail over to just down the hill from start of middle ridge. When you finish middle ridge (ride/walk) about a half mile downstream to the china hole trail and ride that singletrack up - it's less steep, and it's singletrack. Better yet, go up and check out the jackass trail and connect in to China Hole from the south side.
