Trail Description:
Smith lake consists of three interlocking loops; each with a different level of difficulty. The green loop is approx. 2 miles long and can be ridden by an old lady with a broken hip. The blue loop is a little more challenging than green, but still doesn't require much more talent. The only thing that makes blue more difficult that green is the moderate hill climb and a couple of log obstacles. The third and most difficult trail is the black trail. Black isn't very physically challenging, but, it has numerous man made obstacles (bridges, log piles, etc.) making this trail the most fun of the three. The trail is run by Ft Bragg and they do charge a $5.00 fee per day or $20.00 annually. Instructions for paying are posted at the trail head.
How to get there:
Take 210 south from spring lake past Simmons army airfield. Turn left at the Smith lake sign and follow the signs to the Smith lake recreation area from there. Additional signs will take you to the bike trail.

All of the comments that I have read are pretty accurate. I have ridden the entire loop twice, both times staring with the Black first and using the Green trail as a cool down. Tons of obsticals on the Black trail especially after descending down a root ridden section. Tons of fun and will do it over and over again... Lesson learned bring tools and extra tubes.

It's not bad at all but being a beginner I felt that the expert trail was very easy. The obstacles are a little worn but still pretty fun the trail is pretty fast and the expert has quite a bit of switch backs. I didn't have any difficulty with any of the trails.

If you like sand then this is the place...difficult to build speed in some areas on blue/black trails due to the soft stuff

First time out riding in North Carolina. Some nice little descents and jumps, plenty of loose sand to practice in if your weak on plowing through soft sand. Lots of fun.

Not a bad trail but the only one I've seen so far on the east coast. There is little difference between the expert and advanced trails and I would consider the expert more like a trike ride for toddlers. There is a lot of switch back accross horse trails so if you are cruizing watch for horses. Overall not bad but good for practicing your sand racing skills. Did not see any signs for fees.

Great trail for any rider, easy enough for beginners, and if you are experienced then it's fun seeing how fast you can complete the trail. Some of the jumps are fun and the bridges while not difficult are fun as well. Have fun!!

Unlike most trails in NC this one is not closed if it is raining. The sand eats up the rain quickly so standing water is almost never to be found.
The Green loop is a great warm up to take at a fast pace.
The blue section seems to be ever changing and to me offers more than the other two sections
The black trail is not as expert as the sign says, but there are several small enjoyable jumps
There are new sections being worked on and improvements being made to the existing trails.
Its a good XC trail.
If your into freeride it will be a long ride with a slight mix of "fun" stuff thrown in now and again. The blue trail will give you the most for your time.
Look for more freeride additions in the future.

The Green trail is awesome fun for high speed non technical riding
The Blue and Black trails offer more technical obstacles such as switch backs, jumps and bridges - some great views of local wild life too!

Smith Lake is good for all levels of riders. Every day there is something new being built. Very fast, packed single track and better if ridden from beginner to advanced. Only a few hill climbs and plenty of new jumps.
