Trail Description:
The foothills behind Hughes Stadium has several trail options, all single track. The trail is hard packed and has some rocky sections. One some what difficult climb. And a real downhill section that is optional.

Best route is to ride North from the trail head kirting the side of the hills, but there are also trails south of the trail head. Goinf north the trail will gradually start to climb right behind a fenced in area. Climb up until you are at the road next to the Horsetooth reservoir. You can cross the road and ride the trails that run north and next to the reservoir, which lead to other trails. Ride back the way you came, which is what most people do. Or ride south a 1/4 mile and turn left onto a trail that goes up a steep hill. This trail runs down directly next to the 'A' and is a real downhill trail. No weekend warriors! Middle way down, there are several options to take.

How to get there:
The trails are directly behind Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins. Just south of the intersection of Overland Trail and Prospect Road. Right under the big white 'A'. The trail head on the road just south of Hughes Stadium, right before it starts to climb.

the "local loop" as we call it links up the pineridge trail, begining at the s. end of overland trail road riding around the pineridge resivour crossing the road, continuing north on the maxwell trail behind hughes stadium... when you get to the top there are 2 sweet options: at the north end of the parking lot you can go up the hill on the trail or west of the hill (shoreline is to the west and ridgeline is up) both continue north... for a sweet finish continue until the parking lot just s. of the dam, hit the road north over the dam, then jump on mishad (sp?) this will spit you out on the north end of ft.collins..

Also wanted to mention that the trails are heavily traversed in the afternoons and weekends. Yield to runners, dog walkers ect and put your happy face on when passing. Enjoy!

These trails are extreamly challenging but also rewarding! Almost all the trails are singletrack. Located on the east side of Horsetooth Reservoir, you will experience everything from easy singletrack to intense climbs. If you start off just west of the intersection of Overland Trail and Prospect Road(in other words from I-25 take exit #268 and follow the way into Fort Collins. Once you pass Overland Trail make first left and there you are!) Take that trail up, paste the fence and go up towards the base of the foothills. From there you can either go left, behind Hughes Stadium, and hit up a nice simple singletrack towards Pineridge trail(You will have to cross RD42C to get to it). Or you can go right and go up Maxwell. Maxwell is horribly steap and rocky. Takes even an expert a couple of tries to go up once without falling:) Once you hit the top of Maxwell, you have more and more options to take. Go explore!!!But just remember you have to bike back down Maxwell to get to your car! Also

Once you ascend behind Hughes Stadium and catch your breath from both the views and the climb be sure to cross the road and plummet into the reservoir. This is where some fun, fast and at times technical riding begins. This is part of the foothills trail that will direct you north around the perimeter of the reservoir. After a mile of flat land riding you have the option of shortening the ride into a full loop excursion or you can keep riding. So, if your saddle isn't sore than keep heading north to enjoy some more fantastic riding. This requires a crossing the same road twice. However don't miss the tight singletrack on the north end of the reservoir. This last short but steep climb will take you to two more trailhead options. It is a win win situation. Enjoy some more great vistas and some wicked fast single track with some equally exciting descents.

this trial can also be made longer by accessing the dog park trail head at the western end of Horsetooth. Horsetooth dead ends at a dog park and the trail can be as long as 15-18 miles from here if the rider crosses the road along the reservoir twice. First time users of this trail may have trouble because it is complicated to follow.
