Trail Description:
Start at the browns ditch central camp rd intersection on rd 274.Climb up central camp rd, past central camp and gaggs camp, about 14 miles. This is the easy part, 3% grade.make a right at the Shuteye pk. turn off. This changes from easy gravel to steep dirt 4wd trail for about 4 miles. At little Shuteye pass, about 7300 ft, the trail turns to almost all granite for the next 3 mile to the lookout. Go to the lookout say hi to the guy in the lookout, sign the guest book, and get one of the most amazins views there is. from the 8350ft summit the gondola house on mammoth mountain is clearly visible, its only about 25 miles away across the San Joaquin canyon. Please make sure you have enough water and food and dont ask the guy in the lookout for any. He is up there for three weeks at a time and has to haul all his own supplies up there and there is no water. They would probably give some to you but it puts a burden on them. If there is any chance of a storm do not go past little shuteye pk. as it is one of the most lightning struck places in cal. For the average mtber go back the way you came till you get to 007 the take it down to finish. For you hardcores take the old Browns creek trail down the south face of the mtn. from the top about a 1/4 of a mile down, just about where the trail turn north to go back down the 4wd trail look for a cairn and the trail go down here. It is 4 miles of steep rocks and old growth forest till you get to Browns mdw. Here the trail turns to double track follow it out of the meadow to the gravel road. Go about 1/2 a mile down this grave road, it gets steep where it t's into the next road. make a right go about a mile and the road turns into a swoopy fast 4 mile descent if the rd doesnt drop right away you went the wrong way. This descent takes you back to the west towards gaggs camp you will get to an intersection it is more of a y. There is sign here point one way to gaggs cmp. to browns mdw.from the way you came, and to central camp. You will almost have to make a u turn to take the fork to central camp. this will descend another couple of miles of double track. It will intersect another rd. go right a bout 2 miles down you will cross sand creek and another 100 yrds you get back to central camp rd. Go back down to 007 to the bottom. WOO HOO

How to get there:
Get to browns ditch- Central camp rd. on rd 274 at Bass lake cal. north of Fresno

Hey, I'm not a Mt. Biker but a roadie but I've been up to Shuteye Peak and, for the area, it is Primo. You get the drift? We second the inspiration!

From Bass Lake it to the top of Shut Eye and back down... doing the 007 trails... is about 36 miles. You definitely need a lot of food and water. The peak is at about 8,400'.

I don't think it is 46 miles. More like 25, but still an all day event!!

This is a fantastic ride. You can make it 90% singletrack if you choose to ride up 007 and get off at Francis Junction and turn right to Central Camp road. Either way it is a great lung busting workout with some awesome views of the Sierra.
