Really excellent if you go all the way to the top of Lookout Mtn (or beyond). Pretty much like a more technical version of the nearby (popular) Mt. Falcon trail.

Great evening ride. A good climb for conditioning and a blast coming back down, responsibly of course. Just north of the trail on the left side of the road to Boulder is a strip mall with a bike shop. The wrench there is top notch. And the java next store is great. I hit all three in a row. Next stop Apex.

Best Access to this trail is from the Athletic Complex at the School of Mines. Instead of an out and back, try this loop. Aim toward where Clear Creek crosses under Hwy 6 for the first marker. After the tunnel under the freeway you meander to a series of tight steep switchbacks. The trail eases somewhat after that but it is a long steady climb up Lookout Mountain. Connect with the Beaver Brook Trail after the third road crossing. The Beaver Brook covers the last 1.5 miles to the top but there are several technical challenges along the way. Take a stop at the Nature Center then find a trail along the road heading West from the Center. This trail leads to the top of APEX trail. Take the main trail or the Enchanted Forest trail down to Heritage Road. Follow Heritage road Left/North until it crosses Hwy 6 into the Jeffco Government Center. Take the relatively untraveled service roads North a short distance back to the Athletic Complex. Get trail maps from any Jefferson County L
