Ride Summary:
After work weekday ride to shake loose. Fast singletrack with lond dirt road climb. Fantastic view of Denver Metro area.
Trail Description:
The whole idea here is to get to the top of Green Mountain and take in the sights of the Denver Metro area and the surrounding Front Range geography. Most everybody out on Green Mountain is out for a stroll, with the dog, or riding easy.
Green Mountain is another one of the Jefferson County Open Space parks. Park at either trailhead ("Florida" trailhead recommended) off of Alameda Pkwy. Ride immediately South on the trail that makes a circumference of the hill, and stay on it. Several junctions are encountered with trails leading up the hill. Ride South and then West as the trail follows the contour of the mountain. On the backside, or West side, take a right on the dirt road and start climbing. This is the access road to the radio and TV towers on top of the mountain. The climb is long and altitude will play a roll. The view from the top of Green Mountain is awesome. Rabbits and deer may also be seen at dusk.
Once the top is gained, ride East and back down to the parking lot. You'll find it hard to get lost, all trails lead to essentially the same area.
How to get there:
From downtown Denver: West on highway 6. Take the Union/Simms exit. Left at the light (South). Right on Alameda Pkwy. Trailheads on the right at the top of the rise.

I hated this trail. There was so many
large loose rocks. I like technical but
this wasn't even very technical. It was
just slippery. My favorite type of
trail is the winding rollercoaster type
trail.

REally fun, fast, swoopy singletrack around the base. The climbs are long and get a burn going, but there is nothing technical to speak of. The only thing I dislike about GM is the fist sized ball-bearing rocks you get on some climbs/descents. I hate to lose ground over some stupid rocks. But they can be avoided, so it's cool. A good ride for people who live in Denver and don't want to drive far.

One of my favorites in the Denver area, check out the reviews on singletracks.com, they also have some photos of the trail as well. Usually pretty dry and snow-free in the winter when some of the higher trails are covered in snow and ice.

good for the beginner. this is where i started out. not a lot of technical stuff, although your legs can get a good burn from some steep climbs. there are good days and bad days when it comes to people being up there, weekends do get busy, except when the broncos play then its not so bad.

Lots of water and sunscreen as there is no shade or shelter. Avoid the crowds by staying off the access road and riding the many miles of single-track. Park in one of the smaller lots on the south side off Alameda Ave. follow the perimiter trail to the junction with the Utah trail and push up from there. A long sustained climb on dirt single track deteriorates to a thin trail of stones which is less popular with hikers. Once at the top head to the north (left)on the access road and take the trail which heads right (east). This trail traverses back along the south face with great rollers, whoopdy dos, and turns. You end up at the Antenna - a fool proof land mark. Great in Winter but NEVER attempt this trail when wet.

This trail is very convenient for those of us in Denver. The climb up is great (start from the left side of the parking lot) The single track down is fun as well. I looked at my computer on a fast section in my descent and I was doing 28mph, so it can be nice and fast. Don't go on weekends!

i wouldn't call this a beginner's trail because of the steep climbs.....i've taken quite a few beginner's there and they've had problems with the steep climbs and did not enjoy the ride as a result...

Another way to the top. Start on the west side, west of C470, on Rooney Rd. There is a nice large parking lot there. Take the bridge over C470 to the dirt road north up the hill. Pass the large rock formation to where it flattens out, take a left on the singletrack. This trail will go north up and down some nice hills after you climb a steep hill hang a right, east, toward the top. This will put you back on the main dirt road to the top. Then circle back around on the singletrack trails. Don't forget your water. There is no shade.
